What Yarn Yardage Calculator does, with a checked example

Every skein label states its yardage, but what a project demands is set by its dimensions and your tension, and estimating by feel is how scarves end up two skeins short. This calculator turns project size into a yarn budget: it multiplies width by length to get fabric area, converts that area to a stitch count using the gauge for the yarn weight, then converts yarn consumed to yards and to skeins at the skein's labeled yardage. The surprise is how much the gauge dominates: a dense tension can raise a blanket's yarn need by a third, and the result is only as good as the gauge you enter.

About 467 yd of yarn. With the 10 percent margin for swatching and tension, 513 yd, which means buying 3 skeins (600 yd).

The scarf is 8 x 60 in, or 480 sq in. At 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch the fabric holds 35 stitches per square inch, so 480 x 35 = 16,800 stitches total. Each stockinette stitch draws about 1 in of yarn, giving 16,800 in, which is 467 yd; the 10 percent margin raises it to 513 yd, and 513 yd requires 3 of the 200 yd skeins.

Stitch count from area and gauge

The estimate rests on stitch count. Width times length gives fabric area; the gauge, stitches per inch times rows per inch, gives stitches per square inch; multiplying the two gives the total stitch count. Each stitch draws roughly its own length of yarn, so the stitch count in inches converts to yards by dividing by 36. Change the gauge and the answer moves almost in proportion.

Skeins, margin, and stitch pattern

The yardage divides by the skein's labeled yardage and rounds up, so the answer never shows partial skeins. Tools like this add a margin of 5-15 percent for the swatch, tension drift, and joins, and some scale the result by stitch pattern: garter, ribbing, and cables pull more yarn than stockinette, while crochet generally consumes more than knitting at the same gauge.

Good uses

  • Choosing a yarn for a self-sized project: the blanket must be 48 x 60 in and you want a specific worsted, so you need the skein count before going to the store or ordering online.
  • Switching yarns mid-plan: the pattern's yarn is discontinued or too expensive, and the substitute comes in a different yards-per-skein ball, so the finished dimensions must be re-run through the calculator.
  • Scaling a design up or down: widening a scarf from 6 to 10 in or lengthening a throw by a foot changes the yardage, and the tool shows the cost before any yarn is bought.

Limits and checks

  • The output inherits your gauge. Enter the default for the weight rather than your swatch's real gauge and the yardage can swing 20-30 percent; the tool cannot know your tension.
  • Watch the gauge units. A label that reads 20 stitches per 4 inches must be entered as 5 per inch; type 20 as stitches per inch and the stitch count, and the yardage, inflates 16-fold.
  • Plain-stockinette baseline. If the tool does not ask about stitch pattern, the number assumes stockinette; garter, cables, and ribbing use more yarn, and crochet more still, so treat the result as a floor for textured projects.

How many skeins for a 30 x 36 in baby blanket in worsted weight?

At a typical worsted gauge of 4.5 stitches and 6 rows per inch, a 30 x 36 in blanket holds about 29,000 stitches, roughly 810 yd, so plan on 4-5 skeins of a 200 yd worsted once a margin is added. Does crochet use more yarn than knitting?

Yes, usually. Dense crochet stitches such as single crochet consume more yarn than stockinette knitting of the same dimensions, commonly 25-40 percent more, and loopy stitches like popcorn or bobbles add more still. If the calculator has no craft setting, treat its result as the knitting figure and add a quarter to a third. If it does have one, use it.
