What Distance Between Cities does and how it behaves

Enter an origin city and a destination city to compare two notions of separation: straight-line distance and driving distance, reported in miles and kilometers. The tool resolves each city to a geographic location, then contrasts direct geographic separation with the length of a road route. Users are often surprised by the difference. Roads must follow available crossings, coastlines, terrain, borders, and street networks. City names can also be ambiguous, so include the state, province, or country when multiple places share a name.

Provide two city names, preferably with enough regional information to identify each one uniquely. The calculation depends on which locations those names resolve to. A bare name such as Springfield may refer to several cities, while an entry such as Springfield, Illinois, USA identifies the intended place more clearly.

Two distance measures

Straight-line distance describes direct geographic separation between the selected city points without tracing streets. Driving distance describes the length of a road route between them. Miles and kilometers are two expressions of the same length. One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers, so changing units does not change the underlying distance.

Limits and checks

  • A city covers an area, but the calculation uses selected representative points. Results can differ from distances measured between specific street addresses.
  • Driving distance depends on the available route. Alternate highways, ferries, border crossings, closures, and route preferences can produce different totals.
  • Straight-line distance is not necessarily an airline's flown distance, and driving distance alone does not determine travel time, fuel use, tolls, or accessibility.

Common questions

Why is the driving distance longer than the straight-line distance?

The straight-line result connects the selected city locations directly, while a vehicle must remain on usable roads. A road may detour around water, mountains, restricted areas, or gaps in the network. Bridges and border crossings can constrain the route further. For the same endpoints, the road route will normally be longer than the direct geographic separation.

Can I use the result as my exact road-trip mileage?

No. Treat it as a city-to-city estimate rather than a turn-by-turn trip total. Your actual mileage can change with the chosen addresses, route options, construction, closures, ferries, and detours. For navigation, confirm the trip in a current routing service using the exact starting point and destination.
