What World Power Plug Guide does, with a checked example

This tool takes a country name and returns the plug type letter or letters used there, the standard mains voltage, and the AC frequency (50Hz or 60Hz), drawn from a reference table rather than calculated live. Most people expect a single plug shape and a single voltage per country. Two things tend to surprise them: many countries list more than one accepted plug type at once, and matching the plug shape with an adapter does not mean the electricity is compatible, since voltage and frequency are separate numbers a device also has to tolerate.

Japan runs on 100V, which is lower than most of the world's 220-240V, and it is one of the few countries split between two mains frequencies by region, so the tool returns both.

Country-to-standard lookup

You enter or select a country, and the tool matches it against a stored table pairing that country with its plug type letter(s), standard voltage, and frequency. This is a static lookup against reference data, not a live measurement, calculation, or crowd-sourced report, so the result reflects the standard generally listed for that country as a whole rather than any specific building or outlet.

Plug type lettering

Results use the internationally recognized letter codes (Type A, C, G, and so on) that describe pin shape and count, not country of origin. When an entry lists more than one letter, it means multiple socket styles are legitimately in use there, often from overlapping wiring eras or shared standards with neighboring countries, and the tool lists all of them instead of picking just one.

Good uses

  • packing a travel adapter before a multi-country trip and checking which plug shapes to bring
  • checking whether a hair dryer, CPAP machine, or other appliance needs a separate voltage converter, not just a shape adapter, for the destination
  • confirming the plug, voltage, and frequency a piece of equipment being shipped or installed abroad will need to run on before it arrives

Limits and checks

  • a shape-matching adapter does not convert voltage; a 120V-only device can be damaged plugged into a 230V country even with the right plug shape
  • when a country lists two or more plug types, that reflects mixed usage nationwide, not a guarantee of which one a given building actually has
  • frequency differences (50Hz vs 60Hz) can affect motors, clocks, and some older transformers even when the device's voltage range covers both countries

Common questions

Does a travel plug adapter also convert the voltage?

No. Most travel adapters only change the physical plug shape; they do not step voltage up or down. Check the input rating printed on your device's charger, usually something like 100-240V, 50/60Hz. If it lists that full range, an adapter alone is enough. If it lists a single voltage, you need a separate voltage converter.

Can I trust this to guarantee my specific charger will work in a given country?

It tells you the country's standard plug type, voltage, and frequency, which covers the vast majority of outlets, but it cannot inspect your device. Always check the input rating printed on your charger or appliance against the result before relying on it, especially for older or single-voltage electronics.
