What Volume & Liquid Converter does, with a checked example

A cup is not a cup: the US customary cup holds 236.59 mL, the metric cup holds 250 mL, and recipes rarely say which one they mean. This tool converts between liters, gallons, cups, milliliters, fluid ounces, and tablespoons; enter a value in one unit and read the result in any other. The conversions rest on the fixed definitions of each unit against the liter, not on estimates. The surprise most people hit: a US fluid ounce and a UK fluid ounce are different volumes, and a US gallon holds 3.79 L while a British one holds 4.55 L, so check which system the result assumes before pouring.

Fixed ratios against the liter

Every unit in the list has an exact definition in terms of the liter, so converting between any two units is one multiplication, not an approximation. The US gallon is defined as exactly 3.785411784 L and the imperial gallon as exactly 4.54609 L; the US cup is one sixteenth of the US gallon (236.59 mL) and the US fluid ounce is one one-hundred-twenty-eighth of it (29.57 mL).

US and imperial are separate families

Gallons, pints, and fluid ounces exist in both US customary and British imperial with different sizes: an imperial gallon is about 20 percent larger than a US gallon and an imperial fluid ounce about 4 percent smaller than a US fluid ounce. A result is only correct for the system its units belong to, and mixing systems is the most common source of wrong answers.

Good uses

  • Scaling a US recipe when your measuring tools are metric: convert cups, tablespoons, or fluid ounces to milliliters before you pour, so 1.5 cups becomes a number your metric jug can measure.
  • Halving or doubling a batch: express a recipe's 1-gallon base in cups, or a 2.5 L pot of soup in fluid ounces to check whether it fits the container you have.
  • Comparing product sizes across countries: a 5 L water jug in US gallons, or a 1-gallon fuel can in liters, so two products are compared in the same unit.

Limits and checks

  • US versus imperial: if the tool does not let you choose US or UK units, assume the result is US customary. A British pint is about 20 percent larger than a US pint (568 mL versus 473 mL), so the same name converts to different liter values depending on the system.
  • Cup has three common definitions: US customary 236.59 mL, US legal (nutrition labels) 240 mL, and metric 250 mL. If the recipe or product label does not state which it uses, the converted number can differ by up to about 6 percent.
  • Volume is not weight: converting 1 cup of flour to milliliters still tells you nothing about grams, because weight depends on density and how the cup was filled. Use a scale for dry ingredients; this converter is for liquid volumes.

Common questions

How many milliliters is a cup, 240 or 250?

Both exist. The US customary cup is 236.59 mL, the US legal cup used on nutrition labels is 240 mL, and the metric cup of 250 mL is used in Australia and many international cookbooks. Most recipes do not say which they assume, so for baking, weigh ingredients in grams instead when the recipe allows.

Is a tablespoon 15 mL?

In the United States a tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, 14.79 mL. Many countries treat it as 15 mL, and Australia uses 20 mL. The difference is usually harmless in cooking but not in anything precise; use the tablespoon definition that matches where the recipe or label came from.
