What Unlinked Mention Tracker does, with a checked example

Unlinked mentions are pages that name your brand without a link back to it: a comparison, a roundup, a review. This tool keeps them in one pipeline. You log each mention, note the contact, move it through outreach stages, and mark it Linked when the link is actually on the page. The funnel shows how many mentions sit in each stage and the share that converted, so a pile of URLs becomes a campaign you can report on. The surprise most users hit: the tool does not find mentions or detect new links by itself. What you enter is everything it knows.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Input

Log these five mentions with their current status: https://example.com/blog/crm-roundup (linked), https://example.org/review (declined), https://example.net/guide (replied), https://sample.com/top10 (contacted), https://demo.io/announcement (uncontacted)

Expected output

Pipeline: Uncontacted 1, Contacted 1, Replied 1, Linked 1, Declined 1. Conversion rate: 20% (1 of 5 mentions has a live link).

With five mentions logged and one marked with a live link, the conversion rate is 1 divided by 5, or 20%. The replied record is still in play, the contacted one is mid-outreach, and declined is a terminal miss, so only the linked record counts as converted.

How the result is produced

1

Logging a mention

A mention record holds the page URL, the brand name as the publisher wrote it, and the outreach contact if you have one. Records start in an uncontacted stage and move one at a time as outreach happens. Every stage change and note is kept on the record, and the funnel counts come from those records, so the pipeline view and the conversion number always show the current state of what you logged.

2

Stages and the conversion rate

Mentions move from Uncontacted to Contacted to Replied, and end at Linked, Declined, or No reply. The conversion rate is the share of logged mentions that reached Linked, computed as records with a live link divided by the total records in the pipeline. Because every count derives from the stage each record is in, the funnel changes only when you move a record.

Good uses

  • A roundup lists your product with no link: log it the same week, while the post is still being edited, and outreach before the page gets frozen and the author forgets.
  • You have outstanding outreach emails scattered across inboxes: one pipeline shows who was contacted, who replied, who promised a link, and who needs a nudge.
  • Month-end reporting: show the funnel and the conversion percentage to whoever funds the link building, instead of a list of scattered URLs.

Limits and checks

  • It knows only what you enter. The tool does not crawl for mentions, and a link that goes live on the publisher's page does not update the record by itself. An unlogged mention never appears, and an added link you never mark stays uncounted.
  • The conversion rate depends on the denominator. Count Declined in the total and the rate falls; exclude it and the rate rises. Two people tracking the same pipeline can report different percentages if they disagree about which mentions are eligible.
  • The records live in your browser. Clearing site data, switching browsers, or moving to another device removes the pipeline unless you export it first. Treat an export as part of the workflow before any cleanup.

Common questions

Does the tool find unlinked mentions for me?

No. You log the mention yourself, by pasting the URL and details or importing them, and the tool organizes, deduplicates, and tracks it. Automatic discovery belongs to a separate brand-monitoring service; this tool is the follow-up half of that workflow and works on whatever you feed it.

When is a mention counted as converted?

When you mark its record as Linked and the link is actually on the page. A reply, even a positive one, is not a conversion, and a Declined mention counts as a miss rather than disappearing. The rate only changes when you update a record, so stale records produce a stale number.
