What Typing Speed Test does, with a checked example

Most people find this tool when a job application asks for a typing speed, or when they wonder whether they are still hunting for keys. A passage appears with a timer; each keystroke is compared against it, and when time runs out you get a words-per-minute score, an accuracy percentage, and a net WPM that combines the two. The surprise is how much accuracy matters: a careless 80 WPM at 90% accuracy nets 72, exactly what a clean 72 WPM scores at 100% accuracy. Type steadily, not frantically.

Typing this passage for 60 seconds, a user reached 205 keystrokes, 5 of them mismatches. One word counts as five keystrokes, so 205/5 = 41 gross WPM. Accuracy is correct over total keystrokes: 200/205 = 97.6%. Net WPM is gross times accuracy: 41 x 200/205 = 40.0. The passage runs 209 characters, so the timer, not the finish line, ends this run.

How WPM and accuracy are computed

The timer runs while you type the passage shown on screen, and each keystroke is compared with the passage character by character. One word counts as five keystrokes; spaces count as keystrokes too, so gross WPM is keystrokes typed divided by five, divided by minutes elapsed. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the passage, and net WPM is gross WPM times accuracy: errors cost you twice.

What a round looks like

You pick a test length, usually 15 seconds to two minutes, and start typing; a running WPM figure updates as you go, and a cursor shows where you are in the passage. The test ends when the timer expires or you finish the passage, whichever comes first. The final screen shows gross WPM, accuracy, net WPM, and how the run compares with your past runs.

Good uses

  • Before applying for a role that states a minimum typing speed (data entry, transcription, customer support), run a 60-second test to see whether you clear the bar and by how much.
  • As a weekly practice check: retake the same test length to watch net WPM and accuracy over time, since one can climb while the other slides.
  • To measure the effect of a new keyboard, key layout, or posture change by comparing a baseline score against a fresh run, instead of trusting impressions.

Limits and checks

  • A single run is noisy: nerves, warm-up, and passage difficulty all move the result, so treat one score as a sample, not a verdict. Take several runs and keep the best or the average before judging yourself.
  • Numbers from different test lengths are not comparable, and neither are numbers from different sites: tools disagree on whether corrected mistakes and backspace keystrokes count, so 60 WPM on one site can read 55 on another.
  • The passage is plain English with no punctuation or numbers and no thinking required. Real typing involves capitals, digits, symbols, and pauses, so your measured speed will usually run ahead of your working speed on actual documents.

Common questions

What is a good typing speed?

Average adult typing speed is around 40 WPM, roughly 55 for touch typists; 60+ is comfortably fast, and many jobs that quote a requirement ask for 50-70. But the requirement is usually net speed, so 75 gross WPM at 90% accuracy nets 67.5. Benchmark your own trend rather than a universal number.

Does pressing backspace to fix a mistake lower my score?

Yes, in the standard keystroke model. The mistaken keystroke already happened and counts against accuracy, and the backspace itself is another keystroke. Some tools count only the characters that end up wrong, but either way the error happened; correcting keeps the passage on track, which is usually worth it. The safest strategy is a steady, deliberate pace: accuracy drags net WPM down more than raw speed lifts it.
