A garden bed can sit in sun at noon and shadow by four, yet plant tags quote sun requirements in hours nobody has counted. This tracker turns that guesswork into a record: you log the direct-sun hours each zone received per day, and it keeps the history, sums the week, and shows how each zone's tally compares with the light needs of the plants you want there. What surprises most first-time users is that the answer changes all season: the sun's path shifts and trees leaf out, so a single sunny day is a sample, not a verdict.

Expected output

Weekly total: 40 hours across 7 days. Daily average: 5.7 hours. Days reaching the 6-hour full-sun mark: 4 of 7 (Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun).

The tool sums the week's logged hours and divides by the number of days logged: 40 divided by 7 is 5.7, and the count of days at or above the 6-hour full-sun mark is 4 of 7. This is the arithmetic behind every zone summary.

How the result is produced

Daily logging

You name each garden zone, then log the direct-sun hours it received that day. Entries carry zone, date, and hours, so you can log between watering and let the record build. If you are unsure of a single number, log morning, midday, and afternoon shade checks instead, and let the day's entries tell you the spread.

Weekly totals and season history

Each zone's entries are summed into daily totals, then rolled up into weekly averages and a running history you can browse by week or month. The tool counts how many days a zone cleared the full-sun mark, and each zone's tally sits next to the light needs of the plants assigned to it, so a struggling bed shows up as a number, not a hunch.

Good uses

  • Before planting a new bed: log it for one or two weeks in the season you will plant, then choose species whose light needs the recorded hours actually meet.
  • Diagnosing a struggling plant: pull the zone's weekly history and compare it with the species' stated need, such as a full-sun vegetable getting only four logged hours.
  • Planning for seasonal change: record the same zone in spring and again after trees leaf out or the sun's path drops, to see how summer light will differ.

Limits and checks

  • Logged hours are estimates, and hours mean direct sun: bright light under a tree or through clouds does not count toward full-sun totals.
  • A week's log in May does not predict August; sun angle and tree canopy change the count, so re-log the same zones when the season shifts.
  • Boundary zones are the trap: four or six hours sits at the edge of the categories, and published thresholds differ, so treat borderline readings as flexible rather than exact.

Common questions

How many days should I log before trusting the result?

A week of entries gives a usable average, and two weeks is better if the weather was odd, but there is no single log that answers for the year. Sun exposure moves with the seasons: re-log in spring, after the canopy fills in, and again in late summer if you are choosing plants for fall.

Can I use this instead of a light meter or a plant tag?

No. The tracker records what you observe; it cannot see shadows for you, and plant light needs printed on tags are guidelines that vary between sources and climates. Use the logged history to sanity-check a tag, then confirm borderline choices against your local extension service.
