An oven recipe and a slow cooker recipe are the same dish cooked by different physics: the oven applies dry heat at 350 degrees F, while the slow cooker simmers low and moist at about 200 degrees F on LOW and 300 degrees F on HIGH. This tool swaps cooking time and heat setting between the two, in either direction, on the standard rule of thumb that one hour in the oven is roughly eight hours on LOW or four on HIGH. The surprise people hit: the result is an approximation, not a precise equation, and it assumes your dish is suited to slow cooking.

The conversion uses the rule of thumb that 1 hour in a 350 degrees F oven equals about 8 hours on LOW or 4 hours on HIGH, since HIGH runs twice as fast as LOW. Enter an oven time and you get slow cooker times for both settings; enter a slow cooker time and setting and you get the oven equivalent, so 6 hours on LOW becomes 3 hours on HIGH.

Temperature settings

A slow cooker has no temperature dial: LOW and HIGH are the only settings, running near 200 and 300 degrees F against the oven's typical 350. The tool maps the oven temperature to the matching slow cooker setting rather than asking you to dial an exact temperature, and because the covered crock traps steam, converted dishes generally need a little less liquid than the oven version, not more.

Limits and checks

  • The ratio is a rule of thumb, and published charts disagree, some equating 1 oven hour to as little as 4 hours on LOW. Treat any output as a starting estimate and verify doneness with a probe thermometer rather than trusting the clock.
  • The math assumes a dish that survives long, moist cooking. Fish, eggs, cream, lean chicken breast, and tender vegetables overcook during a 6-8 hour conversion even when the numbers line up; those ingredients go in during the last hour.
  • Real slow cookers vary: crock size, how full it is, the size of the meat pieces, and lid removal all shift actual cook time, often by an hour or more. Very long outputs are also unreliable, since the linear rule breaks down beyond roughly 10 hours.

Common questions

Is cooking on HIGH for half the time really the same as LOW?

Only roughly. HIGH runs about twice as fast as LOW, so 8 hours on LOW converts to about 4 hours on HIGH, but quality differs: the hotter setting can toughen lean meat and dry out the edges of a large roast. Use the converted time as a starting estimate and check for doneness well before it arrives.

My slow cooker recipe says 4 hours on HIGH. How long would that take in the oven?

Roughly 1 hour at 350 degrees F, by the usual ratio: 4 hours on HIGH equals about 8 hours on LOW, which equals about 1 hour in the oven. Start checking around 45 minutes, since oven heat is drier and more intense and the dish can go from done to overdone quickly. Dairy- or fish-heavy dishes finish even faster.
