What Power Supply Calculator does, with a checked example

This tool adds up the power draw of every component you plan to power - CPU, graphics card, storage, fans, pump, peripherals - and reports the total wattage your supply must deliver. You work through the list, entering or selecting each part, and the page totals the loads for you. The figure people most often misread is the total itself: it is a floor, not a recommendation. A supply running at 100% of its rating is louder, hotter, and less efficient than one sized with headroom, so the tool recommends a unit rated above the computed load, rounded to a standard size.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Expected output

Total system draw: 360W. Recommended supply: 450W (computed peak load is 80% of the rating).

The six figures sum to 360W (100 + 200 + 40 + 10 + 5 + 5). Sizing so the peak draw is 80% of the unit's rating gives 360 / 0.8 = 450W, a standard supply size, so the recommendation is 450W rather than a unit equal to the total.

Component power inventory

Each component contributes a power figure: CPUs are rated by maximum turbo power rather than base TDP, GPUs by their board power, and drives, fans, and pumps by their continuous draws. The page sums every entry you make, so the result is only as accurate as the figures entered; underestimating one part shifts the total down.

Headroom and sizing

The summed wattage is the peak load the supply must carry. A supply is most efficient and quietest between roughly 50% and 80% of its rated capacity, so the tool recommends a unit whose rating clears the total with headroom and rounds up to a standard size: 450, 550, 650, 750, 850, or 1000W. The recommendation exists because the total alone, used directly as a rating, leaves no margin.

Good uses

  • Choosing the power supply for a new PC build: enter the CPU and GPU you picked, add the rest, and read off the wattage class to order.
  • Checking whether an existing supply can take an upgrade: add the new graphics card or CPU to the list and compare the new total against the installed unit's rating.
  • Sizing a bench supply or transformer for a hobby project: total the draws of LEDs, motors, sensors, and controllers you intend to run from one source.

Limits and checks

  • The result is only as good as the figures you enter. A CPU's base TDP can understate its maximum boost draw by a wide margin on high-end chips, and every missed component - motherboard, fans, pump - pulls the total down.
  • Peak draw is not a constant. Graphics cards can pull short transient spikes above their board power rating; a total sitting at 95% of the supply's rating leaves almost no room for those bursts.
  • The 80 Plus badge (bronze, gold, platinum) describes AC-to-DC efficiency, not capacity. A gold rating does not mean the unit can deliver more watts; it means less wall power is wasted converting them.

Common questions

My list has only CPU, GPU, and RAM. Is the result complete?

No. The calculator totals only what you enter, and the rest of the system still draws power: a motherboard typically adds 30-50W, an SSD 2-5W, a mechanical drive about 10W, and fans and pumps a few watts each. Add everything you plan to run, or the total will come out low and may push your supply choice down a size.

What if the total lands exactly on a supply's rating?

Size up one step. A supply run at its rated maximum sits in its least efficient band, runs hot, and has no margin for transient spikes; some manufacturers also quote peak output as a short-burst figure, not a continuous one. The next standard size costs little more and removes the risk.
