What Piano Chord Player does, with a checked example

Click a key and it sounds; click several and they ring together. The chord control stacks a chord's notes at once, and the octave selector moves the playable range up or down so the same note names are reachable in different registers. Sustain lets notes keep ringing after their keys are released. The surprise for most users is register: the same chord name sounds entirely different an octave lower or higher, so when something sounds wrong, the octave selector - not the chord - is usually what to check first.

A major chord is the root plus a major third and a perfect fifth above it: for C that is C, E, G. In octave 4 those are C4, E4, and G4 at their equal-tempered frequencies.

Note and chord playback

Each key on the keyboard is one note; clicking it sounds that pitch, and pressing several keys at once sounds them together, so any chord you can find on the keys is playable even if it is not in the preset list. The chord control plays a named chord's notes simultaneously instead of requiring you to place each note yourself.

Sustain and octave

Sustain holds a note after its key is released, so the sound fades on its own rather than stopping with your hand. The octave selector shifts the playable range in whole-octave steps, moving every note up or down together. Both controls change what you hear more than the individual keys do.

Good uses

  • Comparing chord qualities - major, minor, seventh - by ear before committing one to a song or arrangement.
  • Sketching a melody or checking an idea at a playable keyboard when you have no instrument at hand.
  • Learning the keyboard layout: pressing keys to match note names to positions, and finding the same note in different octaves.

Limits and checks

  • Register changes the sound dramatically: the same chord name at a low octave is dark and muddy, at a high octave thin and bright. If a chord sounds wrong, check the octave selector before doubting the chord itself.
  • Sustain accumulates. With it on, earlier notes keep ringing into later ones, and repeated playing builds a wash of overlapping sound. The output stays clean only with sustain off, so silence the tool before judging a passage.
  • The tool plays pitches; it does not judge them. It will not identify a chord you play by ear, flag a wrong note, or say whether a chord fits your song. Enharmonic spellings (C sharp and D flat) are the same key and sound identical.

Common questions

Why does the note keep ringing after I release the key?

Sustain is on. With sustain engaged, notes keep sounding after their keys are released and fade on their own instead of stopping with your hand. Turn sustain off and notes stop the moment you release the key. If a short ring remains after that, it is the natural decay tail of the tone, not sustain.

Do I have to use preset chords, or can I play my own?

Both. Pressing several keys at once sounds them together, so any chord you can find on the keys plays, preset or not. Use the chord control when you want a named chord stacked for you - a C major built from C, E, and G, for example - without hunting for each key.
