What Noise Level Meter does and how it behaves

Noise Level Meter turns sound picked up by your device microphone into a changing decibel display and visual gauge, so you can watch the local level rise and fall in real time. Grant microphone permission, keep the device still, and observe the reading while the room or source changes. The microphone signal is the input; there is no number to type. The common surprise is that a browser device is not automatically a calibrated sound-level meter. Unless calibration and weighting are explicitly identified, treat results as same-device comparisons, not certified dB SPL, dBA, workplace-exposure, or legal measurements.

How the result is produced

Live microphone reading

After microphone permission is granted, the active input supplies live sound to the meter, and the gauge updates as the captured level changes. Speech, a nearby fan, or movement toward and away from a source can change the display. Measurement stays in the browser and audio is not uploaded. Denying permission, muting the microphone, or selecting an unavailable input prevents a meaningful ambient reading.

Reading the gauge

Decibels express a logarithmic ratio, so equal steps on the number scale do not mean equal additions of sound energy. For a useful comparison, keep the microphone, device position, distance, orientation, and system settings fixed, then compare the recurring or stable range rather than one flickering value. A before-and-after reading on one device is more defensible than comparing unrelated readings from a phone and laptop.

Good uses

  • Compare candidate desk, reading, or recording positions in one room, using the same device and allowing each location's gauge range to settle.
  • See whether closing a window or door produces a repeatable reduction in traffic, conversation, or machinery noise at a fixed position.
  • Check whether a fan, air conditioner, computer, or appliance is responsible for a recurring rise in the room's background reading.

Limits and checks

  • The label 'dB' alone does not establish an acoustic reference, calibration, A- or C-frequency weighting, or fast or slow time weighting. If those are not explicitly identified, do not silently interpret the number as dB SPL, dBA, dBC, or a standards-compliant sound-level measurement.
  • Phone, tablet, headset, and laptop microphones have different sensitivity and frequency response. Automatic gain control, noise suppression, input gain, and operating-system settings may also change the displayed level, flatten peaks, or make two otherwise identical tests disagree.
  • Distance and direction matter, as do reflections, wind across the microphone, a case, a hand, and short peaks. Moving the device during a test changes what is being measured. A live gauge reading alone does not provide a time-averaged exposure dose or capture a room's entire sound field.

Common questions

Why does it disagree with a handheld sound level meter?

They may not be reporting the same acoustic quantity. A purpose-built meter can have acoustic calibration, defined frequency weighting, and a specified response time, while the browser reading depends on the active microphone and device settings. Positioning alone can cause a difference. No, matching the two displays at one moment or one sound level does not validate agreement across other frequencies and levels.

Can I use this reading to decide whether noise is safe or violates a rule?

No. Safety and compliance decisions depend on the applicable rule, exposure duration, measurement position, frequency and time weighting, and equipment calibration. This meter can help reveal a repeatable change or show where a formal check may be worthwhile, but its displayed number alone cannot establish hearing risk, certify a room or workplace, or replace a measurement performed under the required procedure.
