Goal-based allocation

The goal choice tells the calculator whether the macro estimate is intended for cutting, bulking, or maintenance. That label does not establish whether a person is truly in an energy deficit, surplus, or balance. The real outcome depends on actual food intake relative to energy expenditure, so the selected goal and the resulting change in body weight should be checked against each other.

Ratios and energy

Macro ratios describe how dietary energy is divided among protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Protein and carbohydrate are commonly calculated at 4 kilocalories per gram, while fat is calculated at 9 kilocalories per gram. Consequently, calorie percentages should not be read as gram percentages. Fat can represent a substantial calorie share while contributing fewer grams than either protein or carbohydrate.

  • Setting an initial daily macro target before beginning a calorie-controlled cutting phase, then comparing the target with observed weight and training performance.

Limits and checks

  • The word optimal does not mean uniquely correct. Different macro splits can provide the same total energy, and individual preferences, digestion, training demands, and medical considerations may favor different distributions.
  • A target is not a record of what was eaten. Serving-size errors, uncooked versus cooked food weights, restaurant estimates, and incomplete food labels can make tracked intake differ from the calculated plan.
  • Maintenance needs are estimates and can change with body weight, activity, training volume, illness, or routine. A result that once maintained weight may later produce a deficit or surplus.

Common questions

Are these macro targets a medical nutrition prescription?

No. The result is a general planning estimate, not a diagnosis or individualized clinical diet. People who are pregnant, have kidney disease, diabetes, digestive conditions, a history of disordered eating, or another condition affected by food intake should review macro targets with an appropriately qualified health professional before relying on them.

Why do the macro calorie percentages not match the proportions of grams?

Each gram of fat represents more food energy than a gram of protein or carbohydrate under the commonly used general conversion factors. A calorie-based ratio therefore cannot be converted into grams by applying the same percentages directly to total gram weight. Compare the calorie contribution of each macro, rather than expecting its gram share to match its percentage.
