What Key Signature Reference does, with a checked example

Instead of deriving accidentals from the circle of fifths, Key Signature Reference identifies a standard signature by its sharp or flat count and shows the corresponding major and relative minor keys. It covers 15 signatures, from seven flats through no accidentals to seven sharps, and lists the affected notes. A common mistake is treating the paired keys as two names for one key. They share a written signature, but they have different tonics and tonal centers.

Sharp signatures accumulate in the order F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#. The first three therefore produce the signature shared by A major and its relative minor, F# minor.

Accidental sequence

The reference spans no accidentals, one through seven sharps, and one through seven flats. Sharps accumulate as F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#. Flats accumulate in the reverse letter order: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb. The selected count therefore determines both the affected notes and the standard key pair.

Relative key pairing

Each signature is paired with one major key and its relative natural minor because their diatonic scales contain the same seven written pitches. The relative minor tonic is a minor third below the major tonic. This pairing describes the signature, not every note that may appear in a composition or its harmonic analysis.

Good uses

  • Checking which notes must be sharpened or flattened before sight-reading a passage.
  • Finding the relative minor when a lesson, chord progression, or composition starts from a major key.
  • Confirming the key names associated with an unfamiliar signature while transcribing handwritten or printed music.

Limits and checks

  • A signature does not establish the tonal center by itself. The same signature serves a major key, its relative minor, and potentially music organized around another mode.
  • Harmonic and melodic minor passages commonly add written accidentals that are not present in the shared key signature.
  • Enharmonic keys remain different written choices. For example, C# major has seven sharps while Db major has five flats, even though they use the same keys on an equal-tempered piano.

Common questions

Does a signature of three sharps prove that a piece is in A major?

No. Three sharps is the standard signature for both A major and F# minor, and the same pitch collection can support modes or temporary tonal ambiguity. Examine the tonal center, cadences, melody, and harmony to determine the key. This reference supplies the conventional major-relative-minor pairing; it does not analyze the music.

Why are C# major and Db major listed with different signatures?

They are different spellings of an enharmonic pitch collection. C# major requires seven sharps, while Db major requires five flats. On an equal-tempered keyboard their corresponding pitches sound the same, but the written note names and signature differ. The reference preserves that notation distinction instead of merging the two keys.
