What Ideal Weight Calculator does, with a checked example

Four classic formulas can assign different ideal weights to the same person. This calculator applies the Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi equations using height and the formula's male or female constants, then shows the individual estimates and their overall span. The result is often mistaken for a healthy BMI interval. It is instead a comparison of four height-based point estimates, none of which considers current weight, age, body composition, fitness, or medical history.

Formula constants

At 5 feet, the male baselines for Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi are 50.0, 52.0, 56.2, and 48.0 kg. Each additional inch adds 2.3, 1.9, 1.41, and 2.7 kg, respectively. The female baselines are 45.5, 49.0, 53.1, and 45.5 kg, with corresponding additions of 2.3, 1.7, 1.41, and 2.2 kg per inch.

Range construction

The same entered height is evaluated independently with all four formulas. Each calculation produces one weight estimate, and the calculator identifies the lowest and highest estimates as the formula range. That span describes disagreement among the equations. It is not a confidence interval, a tolerance around an average, or a BMI-derived healthy-weight category.

Good uses

  • Compare all four named estimates for an adult height without calculating each equation separately.
  • Check why an ideal-weight figure from one formula differs from a result based on another formula.
  • Bring a compact height-based reference range to a conversation about a possible target weight.

Limits and checks

  • The formula range is only the minimum and maximum of four estimates; it does not establish that every weight inside it is healthy.
  • The equations use male or female constants and height, but do not account for muscle mass, body-fat distribution, frame size, age, pregnancy, or health conditions.
  • Kilogram-to-pound conversion and display rounding can change the final decimal, so compare converted results at the same precision.

Common questions

Is this range the same as a healthy BMI weight range?

No. A BMI-based weight interval is calculated from selected BMI boundaries and height squared. This calculator instead takes the lowest and highest outputs from four ideal-weight equations. The two ranges can overlap, but they answer different mathematical questions and should not be treated as interchangeable health classifications.

Which of the four formula results should I use?

There is no universally correct choice among them. Each formula uses different constants but the same limited inputs, so a result matching your height is not automatically an appropriate personal goal. Treat the four values as comparative estimates. Individual health or treatment decisions require information these equations do not include and may need clinical guidance.
