What Gravel & Mulch Calculator does, with a checked example

Landscaping orders use different units for different materials: gravel is commonly ordered by weight, while mulch is commonly ordered by volume. This calculator combines the measured length, width, and planned depth of a path, bed, or driveway, then reports gravel in tons or mulch in cubic yards. The most frequent mistake is entering an inch measurement as though it were feet. A 3-inch layer is 0.25 feet deep, so entering 3 feet instead makes the estimate twelve times too large.

The bed contains 12 x 6 x 0.25 = 18 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 cubic feet per cubic yard gives 0.6667 cubic yards, which rounds to 0.67.

Footprint to volume

For a rectangular project, the calculator multiplies length by width to obtain area, then multiplies that area by depth. Depth must first be expressed in the same linear unit as the other dimensions. The resulting cubic measurement represents a uniform layer, so variations in grade or thickness are not reflected unless the measurements are adjusted.

Volume to ordering unit

Mulch volume is converted from cubic feet to cubic yards using 27 cubic feet per cubic yard. Gravel requires another step because tons measure mass rather than volume. A gravel tonnage result therefore depends on a density value in addition to the calculated volume. Different gravel products can occupy the same space but weigh different amounts.

  • Estimate how many tons of gravel are needed for a driveway with a specified length, width, and compacted depth.
  • Calculate cubic yards of mulch for a rectangular flower bed before requesting a bulk delivery.
  • Compare the material requirement for two possible layer depths on a path or landscaped area.

Limits and checks

  • An irregular project modeled as one rectangle may include space that will not actually receive material; divide it into smaller measurable sections when practical.
  • Gravel density varies with stone type, particle size, moisture, and void space, so calculated tons may differ from a supplier's product-specific conversion.
  • The geometric result does not automatically cover spillage, settlement, compaction, uneven ground, or leftover material unless those factors are included in the entered dimensions or a separate allowance.

Common questions

Why can two gravel suppliers quote different tonnage for the same dimensions?

Dimensions determine volume, not weight. Converting that volume to tons requires the density of the particular gravel. Stone composition, grading, moisture, and how tightly the particles pack can change the conversion. If a supplier publishes a product-specific tons-per-cubic-yard figure, use that figure when reconciling the calculator's estimate with the supplier's quote.

Should I order exactly the amount shown?

Not necessarily. The result describes the volume or weight implied by the entered dimensions. Real projects may need extra material for an uneven base, compaction, settlement, trimming, or handling losses. The appropriate allowance depends on the site and product, so confirm the final order quantity with the installer or material supplier.
