What Golden Ratio Overlay does and how it behaves

A photograph or graphic can be checked against three related composition guides without changing its source pixels. Golden Ratio Overlay places a golden ratio guide, golden spiral, or phi grid over an image selected in the browser. The result helps you inspect subject placement, visual flow, cropping, and negative space. The common mistake is treating alignment as a quality score. These overlays provide geometric references, not proof that a composition is balanced or that one crop is objectively better.

How the result is produced

Phi geometry

The ratio phi is (1 + sqrt(5)) / 2, approximately 1.618. Its reciprocal is approximately 0.618, leaving approximately 0.382 of a whole. The phi grid uses those complementary positions across the image. The golden spiral expresses the same ratio as a logarithmic curve whose radius grows by phi every quarter-turn.

Reading the guides

Each overlay emphasizes a different compositional relationship. The phi grid exposes unequal horizontal and vertical divisions, while the spiral suggests a curved route through the frame. The golden ratio guide emphasizes proportional placement. Compare visible subjects, edges, empty areas, and implied movement with the displayed geometry; the tool does not identify those features or judge their importance.

Good uses

  • Checking a landscape photograph before cropping by comparing the horizon, dominant tree, or building edge with the phi grid's unequal divisions, then deciding whether the alignment supports the intended focal hierarchy.
  • Testing alternative portrait crops to see whether the face, nearest eye, hands, or surrounding negative space relate meaningfully to the displayed golden spiral rather than relying only on centered placement.
  • Reviewing a poster, cover, or social graphic by placing ratio-based guides over the finished image and inspecting how its headline, illustration, focal object, and open space occupy the frame.

Limits and checks

  • A subject touching a guide line or spiral is only a geometric observation. The overlay does not measure visual balance, emotional impact, contrast, legibility, or whether viewers will actually follow the suggested path.
  • The reading depends on the current crop and aspect ratio. Trimming even one edge changes where the ratio divisions fall relative to the content, so conclusions from one crop do not automatically apply to another.
  • A spiral has direction and orientation, and an image may imply movement in a different direction from the displayed curve. Failure to match that curve is not an error and does not make the composition invalid.

Common questions

Does selecting an image upload or alter the original file?

No. The selected image is handled in the browser, and nothing is uploaded. Loading it for an overlay does not rewrite the original image file. The guide is a visual layer used for inspection. If you save a screenshot or another derived image yourself, that copy is separate from the source you selected.

Which overlay should I use for a photograph?

Use the phi grid when you want to compare subjects or horizons with proportional divisions. Use the golden spiral when curved visual flow through the frame is the main question. The broader golden ratio guide is useful for examining proportional placement. No option is universally correct, and a strong photograph does not need to conform to any of them.
