It relates the run to post spacing, then estimates the applicable rails, pickets, and concrete. Results describe materials, not a structural design or complete site layout. The common mistake is entering only the combined footage: corners, disconnected runs, gates, and changes in grade can require additional posts or shorter sections even when total fence length remains unchanged.

Posts and sections

Post spacing divides the fence run into sections. Any length left after dividing by the selected spacing still forms a partial section and needs support. For one straight run, the posts at both ends normally make the post count one greater than the section count. Separate runs, corners, and gate openings can change that relationship.

Fence-specific materials

The section count is combined with the selected fence construction to determine applicable components. Rails are associated with supported sections, while individual pickets depend on how much face width each picket and its gap occupy. Chain-link fencing uses fabric and framework rather than wood-style pickets. Concrete demand follows the posts being set and the assumed amount for each hole.

Limits and checks

  • Account for gates, corners, terminal posts, braces, and unusual terrain separately unless the entered layout explicitly represents them.
  • Treat concrete as an estimate. Hole diameter, depth, post displacement, ground conditions, and the stated yield of the purchased mix can change the number of bags required.

Common questions

Does the calculator add gate and corner posts automatically?

Not from total length alone. A length and uniform spacing cannot reveal where a fence turns, where runs stop, or where a gate interrupts the line. Represent those layout features in the available inputs when possible, then compare the result with a post-by-post sketch. If the calculator has no corresponding input, add the specialized posts separately.

Why can the post total exceed fence length divided by post spacing?

The quotient counts spaces between posts, not the posts themselves. A straight run needs a post at each outside end, and a remainder creates another supported section rather than disappearing. For example, section spacing is normally treated as a maximum. Corners, gates, and multiple independent runs can increase the total further.
