What Fabric Yardage Converter does, with a checked example

A fabric requirement stated for one bolt width can be translated to an equivalent length at another width. Enter the required yardage, select its original width, and choose a 45, 54, or 60 inch target width. The converter scales the length inversely with the width so that the nominal rectangular fabric area remains equal. The important surprise is that equal area does not guarantee an interchangeable cut. Pattern-piece dimensions, grain direction, nap, print alignment, and usable width can still require additional fabric.

Equivalent yardage: 2.25 yd

The conversion is 3 x 45 / 60 = 2.25 yards. As a second check, 108 in x 45 in and 81 in x 60 in both equal 4,860 square inches.

Equivalent area calculation

The target length is the source yardage multiplied by the source width and divided by the target width. Moving to wider fabric therefore reduces the equivalent length, while moving to narrower fabric increases it. Selecting the same width for both sides leaves the yardage unchanged. This is a rectangular-area conversion, not a pattern-layout simulation.

Width and length units

Length is entered and returned in yards, while bolt width is selected in inches. Because the calculation uses one width divided by another, the matching inch units cancel and the result remains in yards. The 45, 54, and 60 inch choices refer to nominal fabric widths, not the length remaining on a physical bolt or its rolled diameter.

Good uses

  • Convert a sewing pattern requirement written for 45 inch fabric when the available fabric is 54 or 60 inches wide.
  • Compare two remnants of different widths by translating one remnant's length into equivalent yardage at the other width.
  • Estimate the narrower-bolt yardage corresponding to a project quantity originally planned with wider fabric.

Limits and checks

  • Confirm that every pattern piece can fit across the target width. The same total area is insufficient when a piece is wider than the usable fabric.
  • Treat listed bolt width as nominal. Selvages, damaged edges, or an unusually narrow usable print area can reduce the width available for cutting.
  • Add allowances separately for shrinkage, directional layouts, nap, matching repeats, cutting waste, and the seller's minimum cutting increment. The converted number includes none of these.

Common questions

Can I buy exactly the converted amount?

Not necessarily. The result is an equal-area figure, so it is a useful starting point when comparing 45, 54, and 60 inch fabric. It does not prove that the pattern pieces will arrange efficiently on the new width. Check the pattern's width-specific yardage chart when available, then allow for shrinkage, print matching, mistakes, and purchase increments.

Can I convert from wider fabric back to narrower fabric?

Yes. Set the wider measurement as the source width and the narrower measurement as the target width. The returned yardage will increase in inverse proportion to the width change. For example, converting from 60 inches to 45 inches multiplies the source yardage by 60 / 45, or 4 / 3. Layout constraints still need a separate check.
