Energy Unit Converter expresses one energy amount in joules, calories, British thermal units, kilowatt-hours, electron volts, or foot-pounds. Choose the unit attached to the known value and the unit needed for the result; the quantity stays the same while its numerical representation changes. A common mistake is treating a dietary Calorie as one small calorie. A food Calorie is a kilocalorie, equal to 1,000 small calories, so the distinction can change a conversion by a factor of 1,000.

Conversion through energy units

The entered value is interpreted in its selected source unit and expressed in the selected destination unit using their energy conversion factors. For example, kilowatt-hours combine power and elapsed time, while electron volts describe energy on a much smaller scale. Converting units does not add time, power, temperature, mass, or any other missing physical quantity.

Named-unit conventions

Calories and BTUs have more than one published definition, so their exact conversion factors depend on the convention represented by the unit label. If a source document identifies a thermochemical calorie, International Table calorie, or a particular BTU definition, confirm that it matches the converter's unit before relying on fine precision. Joules and kilowatt-hours do not have this ambiguity.

  • Convert household or battery energy stated in kilowatt-hours into joules for a technical calculation.
  • Translate particle energies in electron volts into joules for comparison with other laboratory measurements.
  • Compare heating quantities quoted in BTUs or calories with electrical energy quoted in kilowatt-hours.

Limits and checks

  • Do not enter dietary Calories as ordinary small calories unless you first multiply the dietary value by 1,000.
  • A result involving calories or BTUs may differ slightly from another source that uses a different named-unit convention.
  • Energy is not power: converting kilowatt-hours to joules is valid, but converting kilowatts or watts requires an elapsed time.

Common questions

Can this convert watts directly to joules?

No. A watt measures power, which is energy transferred per unit time, while a joule measures energy. You need a duration as well as the power: joules equal watts multiplied by seconds. This converter can handle kilowatt-hours because that unit already includes both a power scale and a time interval.

Is an electron volt the same thing as a volt?

No. An electron volt is a unit of energy; a volt is a unit of electric potential difference. One electron volt is the energy associated with one elementary charge moving through a potential difference of one volt. The converter treats eV as energy and therefore can express it in joules or the other supported energy units.
