What Email Compliance Checker does and how it behaves

Email Compliance Checker reviews a proposed marketing email for visible elements relevant to CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and CASL. It examines the message and supplied sender details for an unsubscribe mechanism, a physical mailing address, identifiable sender information, and wording about consent. Its result is a preflight content review, not a jurisdiction or legal-status decision. The common surprise is that compliant-looking text cannot prove external facts, such as whether consent was validly obtained or an unsubscribe request will actually be honored.

How the result is produced

1

Content inspection

The checker reads the supplied email content and looks for recognizable evidence in four areas: opting out, physical address, sender identity, and consent language. Missing or unclear elements can be identified for revision. This inspection concerns what appears in the draft; it does not independently establish who sent the message, whether an address is genuine, or why the recipient may lawfully be contacted.

2

Regulatory context

CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and CASL are treated as distinct review contexts because the same email may raise different issues under each. The checker can identify content-level omissions relevant to those contexts, but it cannot determine applicable jurisdiction, recipient status, campaign purpose, prior business relationships, or other external facts that may change the legal analysis.

Good uses

  • Review a US promotional newsletter before launch to confirm that its draft includes sender identification, a postal address, and an obvious way to opt out.
  • Check a Canadian outreach template for visible consent wording and an unsubscribe element before it enters an internal approval workflow.
  • Audit an EU campaign after editing or localization to catch a footer, sender detail, or consent explanation that disappeared from the draft.

Limits and checks

  • A detected unsubscribe phrase or URL does not prove that the destination works, remains reachable, processes the correct recipient, or results in requests being honored.
  • The checker cannot authenticate a postal address or sender identity. Text can look complete while containing an invalid address, a misleading sender name, or inaccurate contact information.
  • Consent wording is not consent evidence. The relevant analysis may depend on records, timing, recipient relationships, campaign purpose, local rules, exceptions, and facts that are not contained in the email.

Common questions

Does a clean result mean the email is legally compliant?

No. It means the supplied content contains the elements recognized by the check. Legal compliance also depends on facts outside the message, including how addresses were collected, which law applies, whether sender details are truthful, how opt-out requests are processed, and whether internal records support the claimed basis for contacting each recipient.

Can the checker decide which of the three laws applies to my campaign?

No. Applicability can depend on the sender, recipient, location, message purpose, and existing relationship between the parties. Use the checker to inspect the draft under the listed regulatory perspectives, then resolve jurisdiction and permission questions separately. A campaign may also be subject to other national, state, provincial, or sector-specific requirements.
