What Depth of Field Calculator does and how it behaves

A depth-of-field result is a range, not a promise that everything in it is equally sharp. This calculator combines focal length, aperture, focus distance, and the applicable acceptable-blur criterion to report near and far focus limits, total depth of field, and hyperfocal distance. Use it to test a planned lens setup before placing the camera. The easy mistake is to read a far limit of infinity as perfect distant detail; it only means distant points remain within the selected acceptable-blur threshold.

Acceptable blur criterion

Depth-of-field calculations use a circle of confusion: the largest defocused point treated as acceptably small in the finished image. The calculator relates that criterion to focal length, f-number, and focused subject distance. A smaller permitted circle makes the reported near-to-far range narrower; a larger one makes it wider, even when the lens and focus settings do not change.

Limits and hyperfocal distance

The near and far limits are the two distances where calculated defocus reaches the selected threshold. Their difference is the total depth of field when both are finite. Hyperfocal distance is the focus distance at which the far limit reaches infinity for the same focal length, aperture, and blur criterion. The actual focus distance need not sit halfway between the two limits.

Good uses

  • Checking whether the nearest and farthest faces in a group portrait fit inside one acceptable-focus range.
  • Choosing a landscape focus distance that keeps a foreground subject inside the near limit while extending the far limit to infinity.
  • Comparing how f/4 and f/8 change focus tolerance for a fixed focal length, camera position, and subject distance.

Limits and checks

  • A sensor-format selection represents an assumed circle of confusion. Results can still be interpreted differently with changes in display size, viewing distance, resolution, and the sharpness standard considered acceptable.
  • Confirm whether focus distance is entered in meters, feet, or another unit. When possible, measure from the camera's indicated image-plane reference rather than casually from the front of the lens.
  • At high magnification, ordinary distance-based DOF estimates may not reflect effective f-number, pupil magnification, diffraction, lens aberrations, subject motion, or focus error. Treat close-up results as planning estimates.

Common questions

Why does the far focus limit become infinity?

It happens when the chosen focus distance reaches or exceeds the calculated hyperfocal condition. Under the calculator's acceptable-blur criterion, there is then no finite distance at which the far boundary is crossed. Infinity does not mean uniform sharpness: the focus plane is still best focused, and detail can still be limited by the lens, diffraction, motion, or resolution.

Can this calculator tell me how strong the background bokeh will look?

No. It can show whether the background lies beyond the far DOF limit and how the calculated range changes with aperture or focal length. It does not fully describe blur-disc size, highlight shape, transition character, onion rings, or mechanical vignetting. Those depend on subject-background geometry and lens rendering, so lenses with similar DOF figures can produce different-looking blur.
