What Compost Ratio Calculator does and how it behaves

The Compost Ratio Calculator compares the amount of green compost ingredients with brown ingredients, using material weight or material volume as the measurement basis. It helps when assembling a pile or deciding what to add next: enter the quantities, inspect the green-to-brown proportion, and adjust the underrepresented side. The common surprise is that this amount ratio is not the pile's carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Ingredient chemistry and density vary, so equal buckets or equal weights do not imply equal carbon and nitrogen.

Use one measurement basis

The calculator compares green quantities with brown quantities on the selected basis. A weight calculation uses entered weights, while a volume calculation uses entered volumes. Keep units compatible within a calculation. Pounds and kilograms can be converted directly, but a bucket measurement cannot be combined meaningfully with a weight unless the material's bulk density is known.

Read the ratio direction

A green-to-brown ratio states the relative entered amount in that order. A value above 1 on the green side indicates more green material than brown material on the chosen basis. The result summarizes amounts, not dry-matter composition or elemental carbon-to-nitrogen content. Changing from volume to weight can therefore produce a different proportion for the same materials.

  • Comparing buckets of kitchen scraps with buckets of dry leaves before starting a compost pile.
  • Checking whether a large addition of grass clippings should be accompanied by more shredded cardboard or other browns.
  • Estimating how much brown material to reserve before adding weighed garden trimmings over several days.

Limits and checks

  • Green and brown labels are practical categories, not chemical measurements. Moisture content and composition vary even within one material type.
  • Weight ratios and volume ratios are not interchangeable because loose leaves, food scraps, and other ingredients have different densities.
  • A balanced entered ratio does not confirm suitable moisture, airflow, particle size, temperature, or actual carbon-to-nitrogen content.

Common questions

Can I enter some materials by weight and others by volume?

No, not as directly comparable quantities. Weight and volume describe different properties, and converting between them requires the bulk density of each material. For a defensible green-to-brown result, measure all entries on the same basis. If only containers are available, use volume consistently; if a scale is available, use weight consistently.

Does the calculated ratio prove that my compost pile is balanced?

No. The result only compares the green and brown amounts entered on the selected measurement basis. Decomposition also depends on the specific ingredients, moisture, oxygen, particle size, and pile conditions. Treat the ratio as a planning check, then observe the pile and adjust if it becomes waterlogged, dry, compacted, or slow to break down.
