What Color Temperature Converter does and how it behaves

Color Temperature Converter relates three ways of describing the apparent color of illumination: a Kelvin value, an RGB color, and a named white balance preset. Enter or select one representation to obtain the corresponding lighting descriptions. The important surprise is that these conversions are approximations, not universal color identities. A Kelvin temperature describes a position near the warm-to-cool white-light range, while an RGB result also depends on assumptions about color space, white point, display behavior, and the source being modeled.

Kelvin interpretation

Lower color temperatures represent warmer-looking illumination with more red or orange, while higher temperatures represent cooler-looking illumination with more blue. The converter relates the chosen Kelvin value to an RGB estimate and a white balance label. Despite the everyday words warm and cool, the numerical temperature increases toward the visually bluer end of the lighting range.

RGB and preset mapping

An RGB triplet describes channel values for a displayed color, whereas a white balance preset names a broad lighting condition. The converter maps these descriptions to a representative color temperature so they can be compared. Preset mappings are reference points rather than measurements of a particular lamp, camera, monitor, or photographed scene.

Good uses

  • Estimate an RGB swatch for a lamp specified by its Kelvin color temperature.
  • Compare a camera white balance preset with a manually selected Kelvin setting.
  • Translate a warm or cool RGB lighting reference into an approximate color temperature.

Limits and checks

  • Not every RGB color corresponds to a meaningful color temperature. Saturated greens, purples, and other colors far from the white-light locus may have no unique Kelvin equivalent.
  • An RGB result is not a physical spectrum. Two sources can produce a similar apparent white or RGB display value while rendering object colors differently.
  • A camera white balance setting compensates for the expected illumination. It does not guarantee that photographed pixels will equal the converter's displayed RGB value.

Common questions

Can any RGB value be converted to one exact Kelvin temperature?

No. Color temperature applies meaningfully to colors on or near the path associated with heated radiators and similar white-light chromaticities. Many RGB colors lie elsewhere and therefore have no unique temperature. If the converter returns a Kelvin value for such a color, read it as an approximation rather than an exact inverse conversion.

Will a Kelvin value look identical on every lamp, camera, and screen?

No. A correlated color temperature gives a position along the warm-to-cool scale, not a complete chromaticity. Sources can share the same Kelvin value while lying at different distances from or on different sides of the Planckian locus, commonly described using Duv. Results also depend on the lamp spectrum, color rendering, camera processing, display calibration, surrounding light, and visual adaptation. Use the conversion to compare descriptions or choose a starting point, then verify the appearance on the equipment and scene that matter.
