The activity and intensity determine an associated MET level, while weight and time scale the result. The common surprise is that intensity is not a minor adjustment: two sessions of equal length at the same body weight can produce substantially different estimates when their MET levels differ. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a direct measurement of individual metabolism.

Activity and MET selection

Activity and intensity selections identify a MET value, which represents energy cost as a multiple of resting metabolism. A higher-MET cycling or running choice carries a higher modeled rate than a lower-MET walking choice. Matching the listed pace or effort matters because that selection determines the rate applied throughout the entered duration.

Weight and time scaling

With activity and intensity held constant, the estimate rises with both entered body weight and minutes. The calculator reports energy in food calories, meaning kilocalories. It does not observe heart rate, oxygen use, or motion, so the number is a table-based estimate for the specified session rather than a measurement of that session.

Good uses

  • Compare the estimated burn for 30 minutes of moderate cycling with 30 minutes of vigorous cycling at the same body weight.
  • Estimate the energy cost of a planned walk, run, swim, or gym session before adding it to a workout log.
  • Recalculate a familiar activity when its duration, pace, effort level, or the user's body weight changes.

Limits and checks

  • MET values describe standardized activity costs; actual expenditure varies with fitness, technique, body composition, terrain, temperature, and other personal or environmental factors.
  • Intensity labels can be ambiguous. Choose the entry whose stated pace or effort most closely matches the session rather than relying only on the activity name.
  • Do not assume the estimate matches a watch's active-calorie figure. Devices may distinguish active calories from total calories and may incorporate different personal signals.

Common questions

Should this result match my fitness watch?

Usually not. A wearable may incorporate heart rate, movement, personal calibration, and its own definition of active or total calories, while this calculator uses the selected activity, intensity, duration, and weight. Similar numbers are possible, but agreement does not prove either estimate is exact. Compare them only after confirming the same duration and calorie definition.

Can I use the estimate to set a weight-loss calorie target?

It can provide a rough activity estimate for planning, but no, it cannot determine a reliable weight-loss target by itself. Body-weight change also depends on food intake, resting energy needs, other daily movement, and adaptation over time. Avoid automatically eating back every estimated exercise calorie, especially when the activity or intensity selection is uncertain.
