What Burndown Chart Generator does and how it behaves

Turn a sprint's story point history into two related views: a burndown of work remaining and a burnup of work completed, each paired with an ideal trend line. The chart shows whether actual progress is above, below, or near a straight-line plan across the sprint. The common surprise is that a higher actual line has opposite meanings in the two views: it suggests slower progress on a burndown but greater completed work on a burnup.

Reading the burndown

The burndown series represents unfinished story points at each sprint interval. Its ideal line runs from the starting scope toward zero at the sprint end. Actual remaining work above that line indicates a slower burn than the evenly distributed ideal; a line below it indicates a faster burn. A flat segment means the remaining-point total did not decrease.

Reading the burnup

The burnup view measures cumulative completed story points, so its actual line rises as work is finished. Progress is read upward toward the sprint scope. The ideal guide represents evenly distributed completion over the selected intervals. It is a comparison baseline, not a forecast of when the team will actually finish.

Good uses

  • Plot daily remaining story points before a sprint review to identify when progress diverged from an even burn.
  • Compare cumulative completed points with sprint scope when a burndown alone makes progress difficult to interpret.
  • Summarize a sprint's point history for a retrospective discussion about late completion, flat periods, or scope movement.

Limits and checks

  • Story points are relative estimates, not hours. The chart cannot convert a point gap into a dependable amount of calendar time.
  • The ideal line assumes work is completed evenly across the plotted intervals. Real delivery often occurs in steps when whole stories reach completion.
  • Added work, removed work, and re-estimation can move point totals without representing newly completed work. Keep the meaning of each entered series consistent.

Common questions

Should the actual burndown follow the ideal line exactly?

No. The ideal line is a simple straight-line reference, while story points normally decrease only when stories meet the team's completion criteria. Brief plateaus and drops are therefore expected. A persistent gap can support investigation, but the chart alone cannot identify whether the cause was blocked work, changed scope, large stories, or another factor.

Can this chart predict the sprint completion date?

No. It shows recorded story point progress against an ideal trend, not a probability-based forecast. Extrapolating from a few daily values can be misleading because stories finish unevenly and scope may change. Use the chart to inspect the sprint's trajectory; estimating a completion date requires additional assumptions about future throughput and remaining work.
