What Reading List / Bookshelf Tracker does and how it behaves

Build a personal bookshelf that separates books you want to read, books in progress, and books you have finished. Each book can carry a rating and notes, so the list records both reading status and your own reactions. Moving a title between statuses updates the purpose of its entry; it does not measure pages read or predict a completion date. The important surprise is that the bookshelf is stored locally, so it should not be mistaken for an account-synced library or a backup.

How the result is produced

1

Book status

Create an entry for each book and place it in the status matching your current relationship to it: planned, being read, or finished. Update that status as your reading progresses. The resulting bookshelf is a categorized record, not a reading-time calculation. A status reflects what you selected and does not independently verify that a book was started or completed.

2

Ratings and notes

Use the rating to preserve a compact personal assessment and the notes field for details such as impressions, discussion points, favorite sections, or reasons for abandoning a book. These details stay attached to the book entry and are stored locally in the browser. Nothing is uploaded, so another browser, profile, or device will not automatically receive the same bookshelf.

Good uses

  • Capture recommendations as books you want to read before titles from conversations, reviews, or classes are forgotten.
  • Keep a current list of books in progress, with notes about where you paused or what you want to remember.
  • Maintain a finished-books log with personal ratings and short reflections for later recall or discussion.

Limits and checks

  • A book's status is user-assigned. The tracker does not confirm progress, page counts, completion dates, or whether a title was actually finished.
  • Ratings are your own entries, not review averages, critical scores, or recommendations calculated from other readers.
  • Locally stored bookshelf data is not a cloud backup. Clearing relevant browser data or using a different browser profile may leave the list unavailable.

Common questions

Will my bookshelf appear automatically on another device?

No. The tracker stores its books, statuses, ratings, and notes locally rather than uploading them to an account. A bookshelf created in one browser should not be assumed to exist on another device or browser profile. Treat it as a list tied to the local browsing environment, not as a synchronized reading service.

Does marking a book finished calculate reading statistics?

No. Finished is an organizational status for the book entry. It does not by itself establish pages read, time spent, reading speed, or a completion date. Use the rating and notes to preserve any assessment or context you care about. The tracker answers which shelf you assigned, not how the reading occurred.
