In conventional color terms, a shade moves the base toward black and a tint moves it toward white. The most common mistake is reading these results as saturation changes. The page offers export options for the generated shade and tint range. Retain the exact color values it gives you rather than reconstructing them later from visual estimates or a remembered percentage. A phrase such as 20 percent shade does not, by itself, identify a universal interpolation convention, so another generator can produce a different hex code from the same base and nominal amount.

Good uses

  • Turn an approved brand hex color into related candidates for borders, subdued panels, highlights, and dark emphasis without introducing an unrelated hue.
  • Compare progressively lighter backgrounds and darker accents for a single-color component before assigning hover, active, selected, or disabled states.
  • Prepare a monochromatic chart or illustration palette whose regions must remain related to one source color while using visibly different light and dark values.

Limits and checks

  • Shade and tint describe movement toward black or white, not a guarantee that hue and perceived saturation will look unchanged. Near the ends of either range, colors can appear duller or lose useful distinction. Judge the actual swatches rather than treating one step as a general-purpose intensity control.
  • Do not assume the shade and tint sequence is perceptually uniform. Human lightness perception is not a direct reading of hexadecimal channel differences, and very dark or very pale neighbors can look unusually close. Inspect the range at its intended size and against its intended background.
  • A swatch being darker than the base does not mean it has enough contrast with a particular background, and a pale tint is not automatically suitable behind text. Contrast depends on the exact foreground-background pair. Check each chosen pair independently against the accessibility requirements that apply to your content.

Common questions

Are tints and shades the same as changing brightness or lightness?

No. In color terminology, a tint is made in the direction of white and a shade in the direction of black. A brightness or lightness control can use a different color model and therefore return different codes. Use this generator when you specifically want whiteward and blackward relatives of one base color.

Can this generator create a complete production color palette?

No. The range supplies related light and dark candidates, but it does not decide which swatches should be primary, semantic, or accessible together. A production palette may also need accent hues, state meanings, print checks, and contrast testing. Treat these shades and tints as source material, then validate the combinations in their actual interface or artwork.
