What Interactive Color Wheel does and how it behaves

Clicking the wheel selects an anchor color, then the harmony choices reveal colors related to that anchor through positions around the hue circle. The tool covers complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, and tetradic arrangements, making it useful for comparing palette structures without manually calculating hue relationships. The common surprise is that a harmonious set is not automatically readable or accessible. Harmony describes color relationships, while contrast also depends on lightness, saturation, context, and the roles assigned to each color.

Anchor and harmony

A click on the wheel establishes the anchor color. Choosing a harmony changes the companion positions: complementary places one across the hue circle, analogous uses nearby hues, triadic distributes three hues, split-complementary uses the two sides of the opposite hue, and tetradic forms two complementary pairs. The displayed relationships rotate with the anchor.

Reading the wheel

The wheel is best read geometrically. Moving the anchor lets you compare how the same harmony pattern behaves around different parts of the hue circle. The companion colors are palette candidates, not assigned roles such as text, background, warning, or accent. Those roles still need to be decided within the design.

Good uses

  • Choose an accent direction for a brand color by comparing its direct complement with the less direct split-complementary alternatives.
  • Test whether a poster, illustration, or interface concept benefits from a restrained analogous palette or a broader triadic or tetradic structure.
  • Demonstrate color-theory relationships by moving one anchor around the wheel and observing how each harmony arrangement follows it.

Limits and checks

  • Do not treat visual harmony as proof of sufficient text contrast. A related pair can still be unreadable when its colors have similar lightness.
  • Analogous, split-complementary, and tetradic are pattern families rather than universally fixed palettes. Exact spacing and the resulting color choices can differ among color wheels.
  • The wheel proposes relationships among colors, but it does not determine how much of each color to use. Equal visual area can make a multicolor harmony feel much stronger than intended.

Common questions

Does a complementary pair guarantee strong contrast?

No. Complementary colors occupy opposing parts of the hue circle, but that geometric relationship does not guarantee adequate luminance contrast. Two vivid complements may separate strongly as colored shapes yet perform poorly for small text. Evaluate the actual foreground and background combination against the relevant accessibility contrast requirement.

Can this wheel identify an exact paint or printed ink color?

No. It helps select hue relationships for a palette, but a screen display does not by itself specify how paint, ink, paper, lighting, or a particular output device will reproduce those colors. Use physical samples or a color-managed production specification when the final material appearance must be matched.
