What Financial Ratio Calculator does and how it behaves

Financial statement totals become more informative when expressed as relationships. The calculator turns entered balance sheet and income statement values into liquidity, profitability, efficiency, leverage, and valuation ratios, allowing the user to inspect several dimensions of one company from the same data set. It helps compare relationships involving sales, asset use, financing, and ownership measures, but the ratios alone do not establish what caused the results. The main trap is period mismatch: revenue and profit cover an interval, while assets, debt, and equity normally describe a reporting date. Using ending balances where average balances are intended can materially change turnover and return ratios.

Statement inputs

Enter monetary line items in a consistent currency and scale, using figures from the same entity and reporting period. The calculator applies the relevant numerator and denominator for each ratio family. Liquidity uses short-term balance-sheet relationships, profitability connects earnings to sales or capital, efficiency relates activity to resources, leverage compares obligations with financing or earnings capacity, and valuation relates ownership value to earnings or book measures.

Ratio interpretation

Ratios get meaning from both formula and presentation. Current ratio is current assets divided by current liabilities; net profit margin is net income divided by revenue. Although 2.0 and 200 percent are numerically equivalent, unitless measures such as the current ratio are conventionally written as 2.0 or 2:1, while margins are conventionally shown as percentages. With a zero denominator, no finite ratio exists; a negative denominator usually needs interpretation rather than a simple better-or-worse judgment.

Good uses

  • Review whether a supplier or borrower has enough current resources relative to current obligations before extending trade credit or beginning deeper due diligence.
  • Recalculate margins, returns, turnover, and leverage from an annual report before comparing a company with a peer or its own prior year.
  • Test a planning scenario, such as adding debt or changing revenue and profit, to see which ratio categories move and which remain unchanged.

Limits and checks

  • Use one currency and one scale throughout. Entering revenue in dollars but assets in thousands makes cross-statement ratios wrong even though each number looks plausible.
  • Ending assets, inventory, receivables, or equity may not match an analyst's average-balance convention. This matters most for turnover and return ratios when balances changed sharply during the period.
  • Zero denominators and negative equity or earnings can create undefined, negative, or counterintuitive values. Such results are not automatically calculation errors, but ordinary ranking language may no longer apply.

Common questions

Can I compare the output for two companies?

Yes, if their statements cover comparable periods and use sufficiently similar definitions and accounting policies. Even then, interpret the ratios in light of industry, business model, seasonality, and capital structure. The answer is no when the companies use materially different line-item definitions or period bases, because the apparent difference may come from the inputs rather than operating performance.

Does a favorable ratio mean the company is financially healthy?

No. A ratio is a compact relationship among entered figures, not an audit opinion, forecast, or credit decision. Strong liquidity can coexist with slow inventory, and high returns can be amplified by leverage or a small equity base. Read several ratio families together, confirm the underlying statements, and investigate large period-to-period changes before drawing a conclusion.
