What Salary to Hourly Converter does, with a checked example

A salary and an hourly wage are the same number written two ways, and this tool moves between them: it divides annual pay by the hours actually worked to get a rate, or multiplies a rate by those hours to get an annual figure. You set the hours per week and weeks per year, so the result follows your real schedule instead of a national default. The part that surprises people is the direction of the error: enter unpaid time off as work, and the converted rate comes out too low to compare honestly against an hourly job.

The base division

Forward direction: annual salary divided by (hours per week times weeks per year). The default is 40 times 52, or 2,080 hours, the standard full-time work-year figure. Reverse direction: multiply the hourly rate by the same product. All output rows, hourly, weekly, biweekly, monthly, and annual, derive from the same two inputs, so changing weeks worked recalculates every row consistently.

The adjustments

Weeks per year is the lever for unpaid time off: entering 50 weeks instead of 52 spreads the same salary over fewer hours and raises the effective hourly rate. Overtime works two ways: paid overtime adds extra hours valued at 1.5 times the base rate, while unpaid overtime spreads salary across more hours and lowers the effective rate. Benefits enter as an annual add-on to salary before the division.

Good uses

  • Comparing a $65,000 salary offer against a $32/hour contract job, including whether the 10 hours of weekly overtime on the hourly job changes which one pays more.
  • Setting a freelance or consulting rate from the salary you left, so the number covers what the old job paid instead of being a guess.
  • Checking whether a part-time hourly offer, say $24/hour for 25 hours a week, actually replaces the income a full-time salary provided.

Limits and checks

  • The 2,080-hour default assumes 40 hours and 52 weeks. Take two weeks of unpaid vacation and real hours are 2,000, so the true hourly equivalent is higher than the default result shows.
  • The output is an arithmetic equivalence, not a pay arrangement. Exempt salaried employees are paid per pay period and do not earn overtime, so quoting their salary as an hourly rate describes nothing about how their pay works.
  • Benefits are compensation. A $60,000 job with insurance and a 401(k) match converts to $28.85/hour, but it is not comparable to a $28.85/hour gig with no benefits; the gap is real value, not tool error.

Why 2,080 hours a year and not 2,087?

2,080 is the shortcut: 40 hours times 52 weeks with no leap year. The U.S. federal figure is 2,087.2 hours, which accounts for leap years, and the Office of Personnel Management uses it to compute hourly equivalents of federal salaries. The difference is about 0.35 percent, so it changes the result by cents. Enter whichever divisor your employer uses when the exact figure matters.

How do I make the tool include benefits and overtime?

Add the annual value of benefits as an add-on to salary, and enter the hours you actually work per week. For paid overtime, extra hours are valued at 1.5 times the base rate; for unpaid overtime, entering the real hours shows the effective rate you earn per hour worked. The result is an estimate of equivalence, not a formal total-compensation statement.
