It summarizes the image as a whole rather than identifying the color of a chosen pixel. A small but visually important accent may therefore be absent, while broad backgrounds or repeated shades are more likely to appear. Nearby colors may also be represented by one palette entry. Processing stays in the browser, so the source image is not uploaded.

Extracting dominant colors

Provide an image file and the extractor examines the colors present throughout the picture. It returns a small set of representative dominant colors rather than reporting every distinct pixel value. Because the palette is a summary, colors covering large or repeated areas tend to have more influence than isolated details.

Reading exported values

Each palette entry can be expressed in three forms. HEX encodes red, green, and blue channels with hexadecimal digits. RGB lists those channels numerically, while HSL describes hue, saturation, and lightness. Changing the exported notation does not produce a different extracted color, although rounded conversions may not reverse to precisely the same displayed numbers.

Limits and checks

  • Lighting, shadows, filters, and compression artifacts are present in the image pixels and can influence the extracted palette.

Common questions

Can this identify the exact color at one point in an image?

No. This tool summarizes colors across the entire image and does not use a user-selected coordinate. A dominant swatch may resemble the color at a particular location, but it is not proof of that pixel's value. Use a point-based image color picker when you need the color directly beneath a specific cursor position.

Why is an important accent color missing from the palette?

An accent can be visually important while occupying only a small portion of the image. A dominant-color palette summarizes prevalent image colors, so large backgrounds and repeated tones can displace a small highlight. Cropping the image around the relevant subject before extraction can give that region more influence over the resulting palette.
