What Image HSL Per-Channel Adjuster does and how it behaves

Image HSL Per-Channel Adjuster changes hue, saturation, and lightness within selected color ranges instead of applying one correction to the whole photo. Choose a range and adjust its color character while leaving sufficiently different ranges comparatively unchanged. The important surprise is that the selection follows color, not subject matter. If a shirt and part of the background contain similar colors, both may respond. This makes the tool suitable for color grading and broad recoloring, but not for isolating an object solely because it is a distinct object.

How the result is produced

Color-range targeting

Each adjustment is associated with a color range. Hue changes the affected colors' position around the hue circle, saturation changes their color intensity, and lightness changes their HSL lightness. Pixels with similar colors may therefore receive similar treatment even when they belong to unrelated objects. Working through ranges separately permits a warm area, cool area, or other color family to receive its own correction.

HSL behavior

Hue is circular, so shifting far enough wraps through the available hues. Saturation controls the distance from an achromatic gray at the same HSL lightness, while the lightness endpoints represent black and white. Hue has no visible meaning at zero saturation. Consequently, a hue adjustment may appear weak in nearly neutral areas even when strongly colored pixels in the selected range change clearly.

Good uses

  • Shift foliage toward a different green while preserving differently colored sky and architecture.
  • Reduce the saturation of an overly strong color family without desaturating the entire photograph.
  • Balance several color families independently when preparing a stylized grade for a product, portrait, or landscape image.

Limits and checks

  • The adjustment is not an object selection. Similar colors in skin, clothing, reflections, shadows, or the background can change together.
  • Colors near the boundary between ranges may not respond identically. A visible object can contain highlights, shadows, and reflections that fall into different ranges.
  • HSL is not perceptually uniform. Equal numerical changes can look stronger in one color family than another, so slider values should not be read as equal perceived changes.

Common questions

Can I recolor one object without changing matching colors elsewhere?

No, not reliably through per-range HSL controls alone. The tool distinguishes color families rather than understanding which pixels form a particular object. It works when the subject's colors are sufficiently different from the surroundings. If the same color appears elsewhere and must remain unchanged, an editor with masks, selections, or object-aware isolation is the more appropriate choice.

Why does a hue adjustment barely affect gray or washed-out areas?

Hue becomes visually meaningful only when a color has saturation. A neutral gray has no visible hue to rotate, and a nearly neutral pixel may show only a subtle result. Increasing saturation can make a tint more apparent, but it cannot identify what color a genuinely neutral area was supposed to contain. Range membership may also limit which neutral pixels respond.
