What Audio Equalizer does and how it behaves

This tool reshapes the frequency balance of an audio file using adjustable gain controls: broad bass, mid, and treble bands for quick tonal shifts, plus custom bands where you set the center frequency, gain, and bandwidth yourself. Each band boosts or cuts the signal energy around its frequency, measured in decibels. The processed audio can then be previewed and exported. The most common surprise is clipping: pushing several bands up at once can push peaks past 0 dBFS, producing harsh distortion in the exported file unless the overall level is pulled back first.

Bass, mid, treble, and custom bands

The bass, mid, and treble sliders each apply a gain adjustment to a fixed, broad frequency range (low, middle, and high). Custom bands let you specify your own center frequency and gain, narrower or wider than the presets, so you can target a specific resonance or a narrow band of hum rather than an entire third of the spectrum.

Local processing and export

Adjusting a band updates the audio in place; the tool applies the combined filter response to the source file and produces a new audio file you can play back or download. Because this runs in the browser rather than on a server, very long files or many active bands at once can be slower to render, and results depend on your browser's audio decoding support for the source format.

  • Reducing harsh sibilance or tinny treble in a podcast or interview file

Limits and checks

  • Boosting several bands together can push the signal past full scale, producing audible clipping in the exported file if you do not reduce the overall level afterward.
  • This changes tonal balance only; it does not normalize loudness or apply compression, so an equalized file can still sound quieter or louder than the original.
  • The bass/mid/treble presets use broad, fixed ranges - if you need a precise frequency changed, use a custom band instead of assuming the preset covers it exactly.

Common questions

Will boosting bass and treble together make the file louder overall?

It can raise peak levels rather than perceived loudness evenly - boosting multiple bands adds their gains at overlapping frequencies, which can push the output into clipping. If the result sounds distorted, lower the boosted bands or reduce the overall level before exporting.

Does my audio file get uploaded anywhere to apply the equalizer?

No - processing happens locally in your browser, and the file does not need to leave your device to be equalized and exported. This also means very large files are limited by your browser's own memory rather than an upload limit.
