What Audio Reverb Effect does and how it behaves

This tool takes an audio file you provide and layers simulated room reflections and delayed repeats on top of the original signal, shaped by a room size setting and a decay setting that together control how big and how long the tail sounds. People are often surprised that reverb and echo stack rather than replace each other, and that pushing both room size and decay high at once is what turns speech muddy - the settings that sound dramatic on a single sustained note usually make dialogue harder to follow, so vocal work generally needs a smaller, shorter setting than instrumental or ambient material.

Room size and decay

Room size scales how far apart and how dense the simulated reflections are, which is what makes a space read as small and boxy versus large and cavernous. Decay sets how long those reflections take to fade to silence. Raising decay without lowering room size stacks a long, dense tail on top of the source - the combination most likely to blur consonants and wash out speech.

Echo as a distinct repeat layer

Alongside the diffuse reverb tail, the tool adds discrete echo repeats - time-offset copies of the signal - rather than folding everything into one continuous wash. That's why short, percussive sounds can show audible individual repeats even when the reverb portion sounds smooth, and why an echo-heavy setting reads very differently from a reverb-heavy one on the same source material.

  • giving a short sound effect or field recording a sense of the room it was captured in
  • adding a rhythmic echo tail to an instrument sample or sound-design element

Limits and checks

  • The reverb is generated algorithmically from the room size and decay parameters, not from a convolution of a real measured space, so it will approximate a hall or room rather than reproduce one exactly.
  • Pushing room size and decay high can raise the combined peak level above the original file's peak, so the exported audio may need a normalization or gain pass afterward to avoid clipping.
  • Because the effect is added on top of the source rather than replacing it, a heavily wet setting can bury short words or transients - always listen back at the final settings, not just while you're adjusting them.

Common questions

Does my audio file get uploaded anywhere to apply the effect?

No - the file you load is processed locally in your browser, and the output is generated from that same file without being sent to a server. Only something you do yourself afterward, like sharing the downloaded result, leaves the browser.

Can I set echo delay time and repeat count separately from the reverb decay?

The tool's documented controls are room size and decay; separate delay-time or repeat-count controls for the echo layer aren't part of that published parameter set. Check the tool's own control panel directly to see whether finer echo controls are exposed.
