What W-4 Form Filler does, with a checked example
The W-4 is the form that decides how much federal income tax your employer holds from each paycheck. This tool walks you through the form's five steps - personal details and filing status, multiple jobs, dependents, other adjustments, signature - and saves your answers as a completed PDF in the official W-4 layout, ready to download, print, sign, and hand to payroll. The thing people get wrong most often: the W-4 never goes to the IRS and it does not set your tax bill. It only tunes withholding, and if your employer never receives a valid copy, you are withheld at the single, no-adjustments default.
Worked example
A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.
Input
Filing status: Single. Jobs: one (no spouse, no second job). Dependents: none. Other income and deductions: none. Extra withholding: $50 per pay period. Name, SSN, address, and signature date confirmed.

Expected output
A completed W-4 PDF in which Step 1 marks 'Single or Married filing separately'; Step 2 is left blank (its checkbox is only for filers with two similar-paying jobs); Step 3 is blank; Step 4 carries $50.00 on line 4(c), Extra Withholding; and Step 5 shows your signature and today's date. The form itself states no withholding amount - that calculation is your employer's, using the IRS tables.
The tool transcribes answers onto the matching W-4 lines rather than computing tax, since the form never states a withheld dollar amount. The one figure it carries, the $50 on line 4(c), passes through as entered and applies to every paycheck.
