What Slide Aspect Ratio Converter does, with a checked example

Most slide damage happens at the format switch, not during editing. This tool shows your slide content at the aspect ratio you are moving to - 16:9, 4:3, or a custom ratio - and overlays safe-zone guides so you can see which text and graphics survive the conversion before committing to it. Give it a source size and a target ratio and it recomputes the frame geometry and the crop on each edge. What surprises most users: converting widescreen to 4:3 crops the sides; it does not squeeze the whole slide into the frame.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Input

Source slide: 1920x1080 (16:9). Target: 4:3, keep the height.

Expected output

4:3 frame: 1440x1080. The slide loses 480px of width in total - 240px cropped from each side edge. Content must sit inside the central 1440px-wide column to survive; the safe-zone guides mark that column.

A 4:3 frame with the same 1080px height is 1080 x 4/3 = 1440px wide. The 1920px source minus the 1440px frame leaves 480px of width to lose, split evenly as 240px per edge.

How the result is produced

Frame geometry

The tool works with the width-to-height relationship, not a fixed pixel size. Given a source size and a target ratio, it anchors the frame to one shared edge - matching the height keeps a 16:9 slide's vertical framing when moving to 4:3, while matching the width keeps the horizontal view. It then reports the frame's missing dimension and the amount trimmed from each edge as the crop margin.

Safe-zone guides

Safe-zone guides appear as rectangles nested inside the frame, echoing the broadcast practice of title-safe and action-safe areas. Anything inside the innermost zone is treated as surviving the conversion; anything between the zones and the frame edges is at risk of clipping or falling into letterbox bars. The guides are placement targets, not a pixel-exact preview of any specific projector.

Good uses

  • Reformatting a 16:9 deck for a venue that still projects 4:3, to see exactly which side content will be cut before you export.
  • Confirming titles, logos, and captions sit inside the safe zone of a converted slide, instead of finding clipped text when the deck plays on the big screen.
  • Fitting an existing deck to an odd target such as a 3:2 or 16:10 screen, where no preset exists and you must supply the ratio yourself.

Limits and checks

  • Aspect ratio is shape, not size. 1280x720 and 3840x2160 are both 16:9, so entering a ratio without pixel dimensions only describes the frame's shape; the tool cannot tell you the actual pixel size a projector will render.
  • Safe-zone percentages are not universal. Title-safe margins differ between broadcast standards and venue setups, and projectors overscan differently, so the guides approximate where clipping starts rather than guarantee what any particular display will show.
  • The preview shows framing, not sharpness. Content that survives the crop can still look soft if the source resolution is below the target, and conversion never upscales quality - resolution is independent of the frame you crop to.

Common questions

Why is my content cut when I convert from 16:9 to 4:3 instead of squeezed into the frame?

Squeezing would distort text and images, so conversion preserves the picture and trims what does not fit. Moving 1920x1080 to 4:3 at the same height gives a 1440x1080 frame and loses 240px from each side. Keep critical content inside the central 1440px column and the crop never touches it.

Do I need to enter the exact pixel size of my projector?

No. Any 16:9 dimensions describe the same shape; a projector scales its input to its native panel. What matters is matching the ratio and placing content inside the safe zone, because the projector's own scaling happens after your crop, not before.
