What Shipping Label Designer does and how it behaves

A shipping label is the address card that travels with your box: sender and recipient blocks, a weight and date strip, and a barcode the carrier scans along the way. This tool lays those fields onto a label-shaped canvas - the standard 4 x 6 inch (102 x 152 mm) thermal-print format - using carrier-style templates, so a batch of packages can leave with clean, uniform labels instead of handwritten addresses. The common surprise: what you design here is a layout, not postage. A barcode scans only if the number behind it is real, and a label prints correctly only at exact size.

Templates fix the zones; you fill the fields

A carrier-style template divides the canvas into fixed regions: return address in the top-left, recipient address in the center block, and a bottom strip for weight, date, and barcode. You enter the text and the tool composes it into the template at the size you pick. Text that outgrows its zone wraps or needs shortening - an overflowing address block is a common cause of labels the carrier's sorters misread.

The barcode is only as real as the string behind it

The tool draws whatever you enter as a code in the barcode zone, so use a number the carrier issued: paste it from the carrier's own label rather than typing a made-up sequence, which scans to nothing. A re-encoded number is not the carrier's label - its scan events typically attach only to its own barcode. Keep space beside the code clear; readers need a quiet zone at both ends.

Good uses

  • A small shop printing uniform labels on a 4 x 6 thermal printer instead of handwriting each parcel, pasting tracking numbers in from the carrier's system.
  • Making a return label for a customer: your return address, their RMA or order number in the barcode, printed and dropped into the box.
  • Batching many packages from one sender - moving boxes, event giveaways, sample shipments - where every label must share one layout and one consistent look.

Limits and checks

  • Not postage. Nothing printed here is a paid shipment, and if the carrier never issued the number, the barcode never registers in its tracking. For paid or discounted-rate shipping, generate the carrier's own label; use this tool where the layout is yours to define.
  • Scale is everything. Printing 'fit to page' or 'shrink to fit' shrinks the barcode below a reliably scannable size and changes the label dimensions. Print at 100% and measure one copy against the template before running a batch.
  • A clean design alone does not make a code scannable. Dark code on a light background, matte stock, and clear space around the barcode all matter: glossy paper, low contrast, or a creased label can fail at the carrier's scanner even though it looks right on screen.

Common questions

Can I use this label to ship with USPS or UPS?

Not in place of their paid labels. Carriers print their own labels whose barcodes encode tracking and postage; what you design here is a layout, not a prepaid shipment. It suits return labels on prepaid packages, internal logistics, or any case where you control the format and use a number the carrier already issued.

What size should I print the label at?

4 x 6 inches (102 x 152 mm) is the standard shipping-label size - the format thermal label printers feed and the size most carrier templates assume. On a sheet printer, print the design at 100% scale centered on the sheet instead of stretching it to the page, and measure one printed copy before running many.
