What Rent Split Calculator does, with a checked example
Instead of dividing the rent evenly, or by square footage alone, this tool scores every room on four factors - size, amenities, bathroom access, and natural light - combines those scores into one weighted figure per room, and converts each room's weighted share of the total into a percentage of the monthly rent. The dollar shares always add up to the full rent, and the split scales automatically if the rent changes. The thing people get wrong: the weighting itself is a judgment call. A private bathroom or a big window is worth some number of points, and the scheme in use decides how many, so the same rooms can yield different, equally defensible splits.
Worked example
A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.
Input
Monthly rent: $2,700. Three roommates. Every room: 140 sq ft, no amenities, shared bathroom, average natural light.
->
Expected output
$900.00 per roommate, one third of the rent each; the three shares total $2,700.
Identical scores on every factor produce identical points, so the weighted allocation collapses to an even split: 2,700 divided by 3 is 900. It is the one output you can verify by hand, which makes it a useful sanity check before trusting the tool with unequal rooms.
