What Pen Tool Trainer does and how it behaves

This tool gives you a target curve or outline and has you rebuild it point by point: click to drop an anchor, click-and-drag to pull out a handle pair that sets the curve's direction and how sharply it bends. When the path is finished, it compares your anchors and curve deviation against the target and returns an accuracy score. The thing that trips people up first is that dragging a handle moves both sides of it together, so overcorrecting one side of an S-curve throws off the segment on the other side too, not just the one being drawn.

How the result is produced

Anchors and handles

A plain click places a corner anchor with no curve. Click-and-drag places a smooth anchor and pulls out a pair of handles whose length and angle set the tangent direction on both sides of that point. Dragging further out increases how much the curve bends toward the handle before easing into the next anchor.

Scoring against the target

Once a path is completed, your anchor positions, handle angles, and the resulting curve are compared to the target path and reduced to an accuracy figure for that exercise. The comparison is purely geometric closeness to the shown target, not an evaluation of path efficiency or anchor count.

Common questions

Does a good score here mean I'm ready to use the pen tool in Illustrator or Photoshop?

Mostly, but not fully. The hand motion of placing anchors and dragging handles transfers directly, but this tool scores curve accuracy, not path economy, and production software rewards using as few anchors as possible. Expect to still adjust your habits once you're tracing real artwork.

Why did my score drop even though the curve looked right on screen?

The score is based on how closely your anchor points, handle angles, and resulting curve match the target, and a curve can look visually close while still deviating at the point level. Small handle-length differences can show up in the score before they're visible by eye.
