What Morse Code Practice Trainer does, with a checked example

Morse code is a sound before it is a text: every character is a rhythm of short and long tones, and practiced operators copy by ear, never by counting dots and dashes. This trainer plays the code aloud at a speed you set, shows what is being sent, and works you through exercises until the rhythms stick. The surprise nearly every beginner hits is that reading .-. as 'dot-dash-dot' does not transfer to hearing R at speed, because a character is perceived as one beat, not three parts. Keep the speed where whole characters are still recognizable, then push it up gradually.

The trainer plays three dits, three dahs, three dits: ... --- ... . At a 20 WPM setting each dit lasts 60 ms, each dah 180 ms, element gaps are 60 ms, and letter gaps 180 ms, for a total run of 1.62 seconds.

Morse speed uses the PARIS convention: the word PARIS spans 50 time units, so one unit lasts 1.2 seconds divided by the WPM setting, or 60 ms at 20 WPM. S occupies 5 units, O occupies 11, and the two letter gaps add 3 units each, totaling 27 units, hence 27 times 60 ms equals 1.62 seconds.

Speed and the time unit

All Morse timing derives from one base unit. A dit is one unit, a dah three, with one-unit gaps between elements inside a character, three-unit gaps between characters, and seven units between words. Raising the WPM shrinks every duration proportionally, so a faster setting compresses the gaps exactly as much as the tones, which is why high speeds sound like continuous runs of rhythm rather than distinct beeps.

Practice flow

Practice means hearing a character and naming it, or typing text and hearing it played back at the current speed. The visible dot-dash answer exists for checking yourself after the fact; reading along while the audio plays trains the eye instead of the ear, so serious copying practice answers from sound alone and consults the transcript only afterward.

Good uses

  • Learning the alphabet by ear: drill two or three new characters a day at a speed where each one sounds like a single beat, until the whole table is automatic.
  • Building copy speed for on-the-air CW: ham-radio operators aiming for nets, contests, or conversational QSOs use a trainer to raise their comfortable speed in small steps.
  • Making emergency material reflexive: SOS, your callsign, and common procedural signals, practiced until they can be recognized and sent without conscious decoding.

Limits and checks

  • A WPM figure means little without its calibration. The usual convention is PARIS, which treats one word as 50 time units; some generators use the alternative word CODEX, 60 units, so the identical sound is labeled about 20 percent faster. A 20 WPM reading from two different trainers can sound noticeably different as a result.
  • The dot-dash transcript can work against you. If you find yourself translating .- into 'A' while listening, you are exercising reading, not hearing, and your speed stalls at the pace of that translation step. When a session is about speed, answer from sound alone and check the transcript only afterward.
  • This is International Morse, the ITU standard. Older US railway and press practice used American Morse, where letters such as O, C, X, Y and Z have different shapes and characters contain internal spaces, so code learned from an old manual may not match what you hear. Also, SOS is normally sent as one continuous character, whereas typing SOS plays three spaced letters.

Common questions

What speed should I set as a beginner?

There is no single right number. The Koch method starts two characters at your target speed, often 20 WPM, and adds one character per session; Farnsworth-style timing plays characters fast while stretching the gaps between them. Either way, choose a setting where a whole character registers as one beat rather than something you assemble from pieces, and raise it in small steps, 1-2 WPM at a time.

Is this enough to get an amateur radio license?

No, but not because the trainer is lacking: since February 2007 the FCC has not tested Morse code for any US amateur license, so no exam requires it. Many hams learn it anyway to work CW, where the code is used on the air daily, and a trainer like this is how most start. For a license, study the written exam; keep Morse for the pleasure of it.
