What Landed Cost Calculator does, with a checked example

An import's supplier price is only one part of what the inventory costs to receive. This calculator combines the goods amount with freight, customs duty, insurance, and handling, then reports both the shipment total and an allocated cost per unit. Enter costs that belong to the same shipment and express them in the same currency. The point most often missed is that a duty figure is only as reliable as the tariff classification and customs value behind it. The calculator totals the figure entered, but it does not establish the legally correct duty.

The five cost components total $1,000 + $100 + $50 + $20 + $30 = $1,200. Dividing $1,200 by 100 units gives $12.00 per unit.

Build the shipment cost

Enter the shipment's total goods cost and each additional cost component as monetary amounts. The landed total is the sum of goods, freight, duty, insurance, and handling. Keep the scope consistent: a freight charge covering several shipments, or a handling charge covering only part of one shipment, must be allocated before it is combined with the other entries.

Allocate cost per unit

Quantity converts the shipment total into an average unit cost. The calculator divides total landed cost by the unit count, so the count must refer to the same goods represented by every cost entry. This allocation is most defensible for identical units. A mixed shipment can require SKU-level weights, values, or quantities that a single average does not capture.

Good uses

  • Checking whether an overseas supplier quote remains economical after freight, duty, insurance, and handling are included.
  • Setting an inventory cost basis or target selling price from the delivered cost of a shipment.
  • Comparing shipping or sourcing scenarios that have different goods prices and import-related expenses.

Limits and checks

  • Customs duty depends on classification, origin, customs value, destination, and any applicable preference or exemption. The calculator does not determine those facts.
  • Brokerage, taxes, storage, inspection, port charges, currency conversion, or inland delivery may remain outside the total unless represented in the entered costs.
  • The per-unit result is a simple average. It can misstate individual SKU costs when a shipment contains products with different values, weights, or duty treatment.

Common questions

Does this calculator tell me the customs duty I legally owe?

No. It can total the duty figure supplied for the shipment, but it cannot confirm tariff classification, origin treatment, customs valuation, exemptions, or the importing jurisdiction's requirements. Use the result as a cost calculation. Confirm the duty basis and amount against the applicable tariff schedule or with a qualified customs professional before relying on it for a customs entry.

Should freight and insurance be included when calculating duty?

Not universally. Whether freight and insurance form part of customs value depends on the valuation rules and delivery point used by the importing jurisdiction. Include them as landed-cost expenses because they are real shipment costs, but do not assume they belong in the duty base. Determine the applicable customs value first, then enter the resulting duty consistently.
