Common frame size

The size controls establish a common rectangular frame for every photo in the animation. This matters when source images have different pixel dimensions or aspect ratios, because one fixed GIF canvas cannot match them all without some combination of scaling, cropping, padding, or distortion. Check the generated result for subject cutoffs and proportions, then adjust the target dimensions or prepare matching source crops if needed.

Limits and checks

  • Animated GIF is not a lossless container for photographic color. Each image frame is limited to a color table of at most 256 entries, so gradients, skin tones, and shadows may show banding or dithering.
  • A target rectangle can conflict with portrait and landscape source ratios. Depending on the resulting fit, edges may be removed, empty areas may appear, or proportions may look wrong. Inspect every slide, not only the first one.
  • Playback timing is stored in discrete frame delays, and GIF viewers do not always honor extremely short delays identically. A slideshow can therefore appear faster or slower in another browser, message client, or image viewer.

Common questions

Can I make the GIF as sharp and color-rich as the original photos?

No. You can choose dimensions that retain useful spatial detail, but GIF's indexed-color frames cannot preserve the full color range of typical photographs. Increasing the dimensions may improve apparent sharpness while also increasing file size; it does not remove the palette limit. If continuous-tone quality is the priority and the destination supports it, video or a newer animated image format may be a better fit.

Why did adding a fade make the file much larger?

A fade needs visible intermediate states between two photos. Those states become additional frames, and each frame contributes image data and timing information to the GIF. Larger output dimensions and longer or smoother transitions can compound the increase. Shorten the transition, choose a simpler cut, reduce the dimensions, or use fewer photos when the receiving service has a strict attachment limit.
