What Shape Crop Tool does and how it behaves

Shape Crop Tool replaces the usual rectangular image boundary with a selected silhouette, such as a star, heart, or hexagon. The image remains visible inside that boundary, while the area outside it becomes transparent. It is intended for decorative cutouts, badges, avatars, and layouts that need a recognizable nonrectangular edge. The common surprise is that transparency does not add missing scenery: parts of the source image beyond the chosen shape are excluded, so important details near points, corners, or narrow sections can disappear.

Shaped visible area

The chosen shape defines which part of the source image can remain visible. A heart keeps pixels within its lobes and point, a star keeps pixels within its arms, and a hexagon creates six straight outer edges. This is a shape crop, not a transformation of the pictured subject. A person or object in the source remains photographic rather than becoming heart-shaped or star-shaped itself.

Transparent exterior

Everything beyond the shape boundary is represented as transparent rather than as a white or colored rectangular background. That distinction matters when the result is placed over another color or image, because the surrounding design can show through. Transparency also means the visible result may appear different against light, dark, or patterned backgrounds even though the retained image content has not changed.

Good uses

  • Prepare a profile photo in a heart or star outline for a card, invitation, social post, or decorative contact image.
  • Turn a product photograph, texture, or landscape into a hexagonal tile for a collage, diagram, mood board, or presentation layout.
  • Create a nonrectangular image element that can sit over a colored page or layered composition without carrying visible rectangular corners.

Limits and checks

  • Inspect the narrow parts of the silhouette. Star points, the bottom point of a heart, and corners of a polygon can retain background while cutting through a face, logo, caption, or product edge that looked safe in the original rectangle.
  • Do not confuse transparent pixels with white pixels. A preview may display transparency over a checkerboard or interface color, while another application may show the same area differently or replace it when the image is flattened.
  • Treat "custom shapes" according to the choices actually offered by the tool. The phrase does not by itself guarantee that an arbitrary SVG path, drawing, or uploaded outline can be used as a crop boundary.

Common questions

Will the cropped image keep a transparent background?

Yes, the area outside the selected shape is intended to be transparent. The image remains visible within the star, heart, hexagon, or other chosen outline. However, transparency is preserved only when the saved result and the application receiving it support transparent image data. If a later workflow flattens the image, the exterior may be replaced with a solid color.

Can I recover image areas removed by the shape crop?

Not from the cropped result alone. The result contains the portion displayed inside the chosen silhouette, while the exterior is transparent rather than a hidden continuation of the photo. Keep the original image if you may need a different shape, a looser crop, or another placement later. Repeating the crop from the original avoids compounding earlier exclusions.
