LEGO / Mosaic Builder translates an ordinary image into a finite brick or mosaic-tile pattern using colors associated with real pieces, then provides a placement layout and build instructions. It is for planning a physical, stud-based picture rather than merely adding a pixel-art effect to a photo. The main surprise is that recognizability depends more on grid resolution and simplified shapes than on the original image's megapixel count. Fine facial features, lettering, gradients, and narrow outlines can collapse into the same cell or palette color, so judge the generated plan at the size you intend to build.

Grid reduction

The conversion represents the source on a finite grid. Each cell becomes one addressable location in the mosaic, so fewer cells combine more of the picture while more cells preserve smaller transitions. Instead of keeping unrestricted screen colors, the result assigns cells to the builder's brick-color palette. Similar source shades can therefore become identical in the plan.

Reading the build plan

The generated layout replaces continuous image areas with discrete brick or tile positions and accompanies them with build instructions. Read its color labels as selected brick colors, not as the original pixel values. The plan answers where each displayed color belongs in the mosaic, but it does not establish that a matching element is currently available in every desired size.

Good uses

  • Previewing whether a tightly cropped family portrait will remain recognizable before committing money, pieces, and wall space to a large physical mosaic. The reduced preview can reveal when eyes, glasses, or facial outlines need a larger grid.
  • Converting a team badge, school emblem, or simple business logo into a repeatable tile-placement plan for a display or group workshop. This is especially useful for checking how lettering and narrow borders survive the brick grid.
  • Turning a game sprite or other pixel-art character into a physical brick-art plan while replacing arbitrary digital colors with the colors represented in the builder palette. The instructions provide a consistent pattern that another builder can follow.

Limits and checks

  • Inspect thin features at the chosen grid resolution. A line, letter stroke, or small gap occupying less than a mosaic cell may disappear, merge with a neighboring region, or become too irregular to recognize in the finished build.
  • Do not interpret a palette match as a calibrated prediction of the finished object's appearance. Monitor settings, source-image lighting, surrounding colors, tile finish, and room illumination can all make a physical brick color look different from its preview.
  • Verify parts before treating the plan as a shopping list. A named color may exist while the required brick or tile shape is unavailable, difficult to source, or sold only in limited quantities. The layout also does not replace planning for a base or frame.

Common questions

Does the source need to be pixel art already?

No. The source can be a photograph, illustration, logo, or existing pixel art. The important constraint is the mosaic grid: detail smaller than a cell cannot be represented reliably. Strong silhouettes, restrained backgrounds, and separated color regions generally remain easier to identify after the picture is reduced to brick colors.

Is my source image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, and the selected image is not uploaded. This makes the tool suitable for private source photos, although anyone who can access your screen or a result you save can still see the derived mosaic and its build instructions.
