What Double Exposure Generator does and how it behaves

Double Exposure Generator creates a single composite in which the tones and shapes of two images overlap. It compares colors at corresponding positions using screen, multiply, or luminosity blending. Screen favors brighter contributions, multiply favors darker ones, and luminosity transfers tonal brightness while retaining other color qualities from the opposite image. The common surprise is that blend mode is not the same as a 50/50 transparency mix. Image order, contrast, framing, and the amount of light or dark space in each source can substantially change the result.

How the result is produced

Screen and multiply

For fully opaque pixels with normalized channel values A and B, multiply produces A times B, while screen produces 1 minus (1 minus A) times (1 minus B). Consequently, white is neutral in multiply and black is neutral in screen. Multiply darkens overlapping content; screen brightens it. These modes work independently on the red, green, and blue components.

Luminosity transfer

Luminosity is a non-separable blend mode. Instead of combining each RGB channel independently, it takes luminosity from the source image while retaining the hue and saturation of the backdrop image. This makes image order significant. Reversing the two sources can therefore produce a different color treatment even when their placement is unchanged.

Good uses

  • Place a forest, skyline, cloud field, or shoreline within the light and dark structure of a portrait silhouette.
  • Combine a photograph with smoke, paper grain, ink, or another textured image when ordinary transparency looks flat.
  • Test whether bright screen blending, dark multiply blending, or luminosity transfer gives a stronger treatment for an album cover, poster, or editorial image.

Limits and checks

  • Inspect both source images at their actual overlap. Different aspect ratios or subject positions can place the important detail outside the area where it contributes to the composite.
  • Watch the tonal extremes. Screen can wash already bright highlights toward white, while multiply can compress dark regions toward black and conceal detail.
  • Do not interpret luminosity as grayscale conversion or equal mixing. It assigns luminosity and color characteristics from different sources, so swapping image order may visibly alter the result.

Common questions

Which blend mode should I choose?

Use screen when dark backgrounds should recede and brighter details should remain visible. Use multiply when pale backgrounds should recede and darker marks should dominate. Use luminosity when the brightness pattern of one image should reshape the color of the other. No mode guarantees a recognizable double exposure; source contrast and alignment still determine whether both subjects read clearly.

Do the source photos leave my browser?

No. This generator processes both source images in the browser, so the tool does not upload them. That is relevant for portraits or other private photographs. The resulting composite can still reveal faces, text, landmarks, or embedded visual details from either source, so inspect the finished image before publishing or sending it elsewhere.
