What Dot Art / Pointillism Generator does and how it behaves

Every dot in the output is one sampled color from your source image, so the result is only ever as detailed as the grid you ask for. Detail smaller than the dot spacing is not blurred or approximated - it is simply absent. The most common first reaction is disappointment, because the picture only snaps into focus when the output is viewed scaled down or at arm's length, where the dots blend the way they do on Seurat's canvases; zoomed in, it is just a field of circles. Small dots with tight spacing track the photo closely; large dots with wide spacing push it toward abstract stipple.

Sampling grid and color pick

The tool lays a regular grid over the source and reads a color at each grid point: spacing sets the distance between points, dot size sets the circle drawn there. A color-sampling mode picks whether each dot takes the exact pixel beneath it or a small local average. Anything in the photo smaller than the spacing interval falls between samples and is never represented.

Dot size versus spacing

The ratio of dot size to spacing, not either value alone, sets the look. Dots smaller than the spacing sit apart with the background showing through, producing a light, stippled texture. Dots approaching or exceeding the spacing touch and overlap, building a denser mosaic in which the dot grid itself becomes visible. A spacing slightly larger than the dot size keeps dots distinct while the image stays readable.

Good uses

  • Turn a portrait or landscape photograph into stipple-style wall art or a poster print where uniform dots replace photographic gradients.
  • Create a deliberately abstracted version of a busy or imperfect image: the grid hides blemishes, wires, and fine clutter, compressing the subject into a pattern.
  • Give a set of product shots, logos, or illustrations one consistent hand-made texture so a collection of images shares a single visual treatment.

Limits and checks

  • Source resolution is the ceiling. A 200x150 pixel photo sampled at 10 px spacing yields at most a 20x15 grid, about 300 dots, and that is all the detail the output can carry. Increase spacing further and detail vanishes quickly; upscale or start with a larger source when you need a denser result.
  • Zoomed-in viewing misleads. At 100% magnification the output looks like unrelated circles and the picture disappears; the pointillist blend only appears at the final display size or from a short distance. Judge the settings while previewing at the size you will actually use.
  • Dots are samples, not local averages in single-pixel mode. A stray reflection or dark speck at a grid point becomes an entire dot of that color, which can read as noise. And when dot size exceeds spacing, overlapping dots darken the image as a whole, changing its overall tone.

Common questions

Why does the dot art look nothing like my photo?

The dots only blend when the output is viewed at its final display size; at 100% zoom you see a field of circles, not a picture. Also check the source resolution and the spacing: wide spacing produces an abstract pattern rather than a likeness, and a small source simply has too few grid points to carry the detail.

How do I get a result closest to the original image?

Use the smallest dot size, the tightest spacing, and the finest color sampling the tool offers. There is a real tradeoff: the closer the output tracks the photo, the less it reads as dot art. And the output can never exceed the source's own resolution - a low-resolution photo has no hidden detail to recover.
