What Hourly Paycheck Calculator does, with a checked example

Start with an hourly rate and split the pay period's time into regular and overtime hours. The calculator converts those hours into gross earnings, accounts for the taxes and deductions entered for the same period, and reports estimated take-home pay. The most common mistake is mixing periods: one week's hours paired with a biweekly insurance deduction produces a misleading result even when each entry is individually correct. It is useful for checking a pay stub or testing a work schedule, but it does not determine official payroll withholding.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Input

Hourly rate: $20.00; regular hours: 10; overtime hours: 0; taxes: 0; deductions: $0.00

Expected output

Gross pay: $200.00; estimated take-home pay: $200.00

Ten regular hours at $20.00 produce $200.00 in gross earnings. With no overtime, taxes, or deductions, nothing is removed from gross pay, so take-home pay is also $200.00.

How the result is produced

1

Build gross hourly earnings

Regular earnings equal the hourly rate multiplied by regular hours. Overtime earnings are calculated separately from overtime hours at the overtime rate used by the calculator, then added to regular earnings for gross pay. Keep the hour buckets separate: placing overtime hours among regular hours omits the premium, while entering the same hours in both fields counts them twice.

2

Subtract pay-period amounts

After gross pay is established, the tax and deduction entries for that pay period are subtracted to produce estimated take-home pay. Enter each item in the unit requested by its field; a percentage and a dollar amount are not interchangeable. The wage and deduction figures remain in the browser rather than being uploaded, which is relevant when working with personal payroll information.

Good uses

  • Checking whether the regular hours, overtime hours, and net amount on an hourly employee's pay stub broadly reconcile.
  • Comparing the estimated take-home effect of accepting an extra overtime shift while keeping the other tax and deduction entries unchanged.
  • Planning cash flow for a pay period in which hours differ from the employee's usual schedule.

Limits and checks

  • Use hours, taxes, and fixed deductions from the same pay period. Combining weekly hours with monthly or annual deductions makes the result internally inconsistent.
  • An estimated tax entry may differ from payroll withholding, which can depend on filing information, payroll rules, taxable benefits, and year-to-date adjustments.
  • Do not assume every deduction affects taxable wages in the same way. Pre-tax benefits, post-tax deductions, and garnishments can produce different payroll results.

Common questions

Will this match my employer's paycheck exactly?

Not necessarily. It can reconcile straightforward hourly earnings when the entered hours, tax amounts, and deductions match the pay period. Actual payroll may also include rounding, taxable benefits, pre-tax deductions, withholding elections, local taxes, retroactive adjustments, or employer-specific items. Treat the result as an estimate and compare any unexplained difference with the detailed pay stub.

Does the calculator decide which hours legally qualify for overtime?

No. The overtime field calculates pay for hours you identify as overtime; it does not determine whether an employee is covered, exempt, or entitled to a particular premium. Those questions depend on the applicable employment rules and facts. Confirm the eligible hours and rate before using the calculator to evaluate an employer's payment.
