What Guitar Chord Diagram Generator does, with a checked example

A guitar chord diagram maps the neck onto a small grid: vertical lines are the six strings, horizontal lines are frets, and dots show where fingers press. Describe a chord as a string-by-string fret pattern such as x32010, and the tool draws it with finger numbers, open and muted markers, and a barre bar when one finger spans several strings. Custom tuning settings relabel the strings so shapes can be reused in drop D or open tunings. The common surprise: the low E string is drawn on the left, so the diagram mirrors the neck as you look down at your guitar, not as an audience sees it.

A neck grid with an x above the low E string (muted), open markers above the G and high E strings, and filled dots at fret 3 on the A string, fret 2 on the D string, and fret 1 on the B string, each dot carrying a finger number. The sounded notes run C, E, G, C, E: a C major triad with the root and third doubled.

Read from the lowest string, x32010 sounds C (3rd fret on the A string), E (2nd fret on the D string), G (open G), C (1st fret on the B string), and E (open high E). Those are exactly the notes of C major, so the diagram is the standard open C shape.

Grid layout

The drawing is a vertical neck: six string lines, low E on the left through high E on the right, with horizontal fret lines below the nut. A fret pattern like x32010 assigns one symbol per string: x mutes it, 0 leaves it open, and a digit presses that fret. Pressed frets get a filled dot with a finger number; open and muted strings get o and x markers above the nut.

Fingering and barres

Finger numbers 1 through 4 mean index, middle, ring, and pinky. When one finger covers two or more adjacent strings at the same fret, the tool draws a barre: a single bar across those strings labeled with that finger's number. The barre is one fingering choice among several, so the same chord can produce different-looking diagrams under a different voicing.

Good uses

  • Building a practice or lesson handout that names the chords of a song and shows the exact shape and fingering for each one.
  • Showing a student or bandmate how to play an unfamiliar barre chord, such as F major at the first fret, without demonstrating it in person.
  • Relabeling familiar shapes for a custom tuning such as drop D to check which strings are open and where the chord now sits on the neck.

Limits and checks

  • The leftmost string line is the low E, the thickest string. Readers used to tab notation sometimes reverse the order and read the diagram high to low, which flips every finger position.
  • Finger numbers are one conventional suggestion, not a rule. The same notes can be fingered several ways, and any diagram's fingering can be replaced with an alternative that fits a player's hand better.
  • A shape's chord name only holds in the tuning it was drawn for. The same pattern in a custom tuning makes different notes, so verify by ear or by note name before printing a sheet for an alternate tuning.

Common questions

What does the x above a string mean?

It marks a muted string: you avoid it or damp it so it does not ring. In x32010 the low E is muted while both E strings stay open. Letting a marked x string ring is one of the most common reading mistakes, especially in barre shapes, where the muted string sits right beside the barre.

Can I use drop D or another tuning?

Yes: custom tuning is one of the tool's stated features. You set each string's note and the diagram relabels the strings, so the same fret pattern shows the same dots but different notes. Remember the shape's name changes with the tuning: a C major pattern in drop D is no longer C major, so confirm the result by ear before printing.
