What Family Tree Builder does and how it behaves

Family Tree Builder turns information about individual relatives into a visual, multi-generation family map. Enter each person's name and dates, associate a photo when useful, and represent family connections with relationship lines. The result is an interactive tree for examining branches and generations together. The important caveat is that the diagram reflects the relationships you supply. Matching surnames, overlapping dates, and photographs do not establish kinship or make the information historically verified. Because family portraits and dates can be sensitive, the tool runs in the browser without uploading them.

How the result is produced

Create person entries

Create one person entry for each relative. Record a clear display name, add only dates you intend to show, and associate the correct portrait with that person. When two relatives share a name, include distinguishing date or generational information so readers do not confuse them. Leave unsupported details out rather than making the tree look more complete.

Connect the generations

Define the tree by connecting person entries according to the family relationships you want to represent. Those connections become the lines that organize the multi-generation view. Add each branch from a relationship you already understand, because visual proximity is not a relationship. After extending the tree, trace every line through the named people and verify that it joins the intended generations.

Good uses

Preparing a family reunion display that follows one branch from earlier ancestors to younger generations, with portraits helping attendees distinguish relatives who share surnames or given names.
Turning notes from certificates, interviews, and family albums into one relationship map before writing a narrative family history or discussing unresolved branches with relatives.
Organizing the people mentioned in an obituary or memorial, including their names, relevant dates, photographs, and connections to several generations of the same family.

Limits and checks

Relationship lines restate entered connections; they do not verify biological, legal, adoptive, or social kinship. A polished tree can still contain an unsupported or disputed link, so supporting evidence must be checked elsewhere.
A numeric date such as 03/04/1920 is ambiguous across day-month and month-day conventions. If the typed form is displayed unchanged, the ambiguity remains. Use a month name or another unambiguous notation when the date field permits it.
Do not assume every family structure has a distinct relationship type. Adoption, step relationships, guardianship, multiple partnerships, donor conception, and disputed parentage can be misread if the available relationship labels do not distinguish them.

Common questions

Can the builder discover whether two people are related?

No. Family Tree Builder organizes the names, dates, photos, and connections that the user provides. It does not turn a shared surname or nearby dates into proof of a relationship, and its diagram should not be read as a research finding. Investigate a possible link with records and family testimony, then represent the supported conclusion in the tree.

Does the interactive tree count as a GEDCOM file?

Not necessarily. An interactive family-tree display and a GEDCOM genealogy file are different things. GEDCOM is an interchange specification with defined records and relationship structures. Unless Family Tree Builder explicitly presents a GEDCOM import or export option, do not assume its displayed tree can be exchanged with genealogy software in that format.
