What Education Tax Credit Calculator does, with a checked example
Compare the American Opportunity Tax Credit, or AOTC, with the Lifetime Learning Credit, or LLC, using qualified education expenses, filing status, and modified adjusted gross income. The calculator first determines each tentative credit from the expense amount, then models any income phase-out. The two displayed estimates should not be added together. They are alternative results for one student because the same student cannot receive both credits for the same tax year.
Worked example
A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.
Input
Filing status: Single
Modified adjusted gross income: $60,000
Qualified education expenses: $4,000
->
Expected output
American Opportunity Tax Credit: $2,500
Lifetime Learning Credit: $800
The AOTC is $2,000 on the first $2,000 plus $500 on the next $2,000. The LLC is 20 percent of $4,000, or $800; at the stated income, neither amount is reduced by the income phase-out.
